THE CHIEF COMMISSIONER OF RAILWAYS.
Mr. James McKerrow, F.8.A.5., recently re-appointed Commissioner of Bailways, is a son of Andrew McKerrow, and was born at Kilmarnock, Scotland, on July 7th, 1884. Mr. McKerirow arrived in Dunedin in November, 1859, and was Geodetical Surveyor of Otago from 1878, Chief Surveyor of Otago from 1878 to 1877, Assistant Surveyor-General of New Zealand from January, 1877, to October, 1879, also Secretary of Crown Lands and Mines from February, 1878, to January, 1889. From October, 1878, he held the latter position in conjunction with that of Surveyor-General of New Zealand, being appointed in January, 1889, to his present position of Chief Commissioner of Bailways in New Zealand. From 1861 to 1868 Mr. McKerrow made the reconnaissance survey of the Otago Lake Districts, an area of 8,000 square miles. The report of these surveys was read before the Boyal Geographical Society of London and received..,the ation of the President, mr Boderick Murahison, in his hnnufll. address. In 1874 end 1882 Mr. McKerrow was associated with the British Expeditions for the observation of the transit of Venus in New Zealand, and in 1884 he was elected a member of the Boyal Astronomical Society of London.
