THREE MEN FINED

Not long ago three young men were fined for killing protected wildlife near the Whakamahia Lagoon. The birds killed were shags, one of them of a type that is totally protected and comparatively rare. The young men expressed surprise that they had committed an offence by shooting the birds. There are 16 types of shags in New Zealand, and of these only one, the large black shag, is available to shooters. This is easily recognised; and it is up to shooters to find out what they may shoot and what they may not shoot, before they set out on their expeditions.
