BIRDS ARE GETTING HUNGRY NOW
Any time now it will be a good idea to start the winter feeding of the birds since seeds and berries will soon be hard for them to find. I wrote an article last August on winter feeding; so this will be just a reminder to you all and a few words to new members. Birds will eat bread dipped in milk or water to soften it. They like honey or sugar-water (that is, honey or sugar dissolved in water). Some enjoy fat, which may be pressed on to a nail to make it stay put. , If possible the food should be placed well above the ground so that the birds will not be troubled by cats. If you don’t want a fine crop of rats and mice, don’t leave any food around at night. Once started, feeding should be kept up regularly, especially in the worst and coldest weather, because the birds come to rely on you. The great fascination of winter feeding is that one may attract interesting newcomers.
