WAIKAREMOANA CAMP, JANUARY 1961
As this was the fourth Forest and Bird camp at Waikaremoana only a short report will be given. Nevertheless, many of the campers were first-timers at Waikaremoana. The weather was drizzly on arrival and camping-ground conditions were muddy. Only one other day was so wet as to prevent outdoor activities, and on this day most campers went to the Tuai power station. As the week progressed the days became beautifully fine and excellent tramps were made. The evening lectures were as follows : Welcome to the national park by Mr. R. Cleland, supervising ranger of national parks; the history and attractions of Waikaremoana and the national park, with colour slides, by B. Teague, camp leader; slides of 1960 camps screened by several campers and slides of the Ruahine mountains by Mr. O. Jensen, Apiti; colour slides and descriptions of all national parks by Mr. R. Cleland, Christchurch; colour slides of Forest Service work in native forests throughout New Zealand, a very illuminating address by Mr. Roger Cameron, of. the Forest Research Institute; a talk on soil conservation with two films, by Mr. J. Porter, conservation engineer for the H.B. Catchment Board; camp meeting and children’s quiz. Eighty people attended this camp, and
made lasting friendships with one-another. An inspiring service of worship was conducted on the Sunday morning by Rev. A. Hitchcock of Wairoa. On two days the camp took part in very informative bush walks with track-side informal talks, led and given by Mr. Roger Cameron. These were greatly appreciated. We were also fortunate in having with us for the whole camp Mr. and Mrs. R. Cleland and family, of Christchurch.
