MISS L. A. DAFF

THE cover picture illustrating a bellbird on the bough of a kowhai is taken from a painting by the late Miss L. A. Daff. This highly-gifted artist, who came from London in 1926, had a flair for portraying New Zealand birds and flowers to perfection.

In the words of Mr. H. D. Skinner, Dunedin: “I believe she had no equal in sketching and painting our native birds. Her chief talent lay in an unerringly effective use of colour, clear and dignified lettering, and

strikingly beautiful sketches, usually of animals or flowers.”

The Forest and Bird Protection Society commissioned Miss Daff to paint two series of birds for the albums, and these were executed with an extraordinary exactness of colour, detail and harmony.

The executive feels that her passing is a grievous loss; but that the beauty of her work lives on, and will undoubtedly give pleasure to many succeeding generations.
