Stolen, at Ashburton, during the evening of the 26th ultimo, six fire shovels, No. o size, handles rather thick, marked 18-1-76 on handle, the property of J. 1 owler, Tancred street, and identifiable only by mark on handle.

Harry Clifford 35 years, sft. 4 or sin., slight build, brown hair and sandy moustache, cheeks and chin shaved, hollow cheeks, nose on one side a bully, still in Christchurch ; and John Fergusson, Scotch, 35 years, sft. 10 or lli n medium build good straight figure, black hair, beard, whiskers and moustache clipped close, sallow complexion, dark eyes large hooked nose, bad expression of countenance a card sharper, dressed in dark check tweed suit, and hard black hat, who has disappeared are suspected.

Stolen from the person of Mrs. Hobden, of Leithfield, whilst in Christchurch, ’ on the 2nd instant, at 6 p.m., a small yellow purse containing £4 in single notes; 10s. gold,

and ss. silver ; money not identifiabe; a very doubtful case.

Stolen from the person of Mrs. David Thow, of Papanui Boad, at the Foresters’ Arms Hotel, Christchurch, on the 20th ult., a pair of gold earrings, leaf pattern, and piece of "quartz in each, and a brooch to match. Identifiable. She was drunk at the time. A doubtful case. -

Stolen' from W. Fitzgerald, Gloucester street, Christchurch, on the 2nd inst, a carriage rug, black on one side, yellow stripes on the other, and a large white blanket. Identifiable.

Stolen from the person of Frederick Golding, at the City Hotel, Christchurch, about 9 p.m, 3rd inst., a new meerschaum pipe, large size, straight stem, clouded amber mouthpiece, in black case, lined with green, value 255, and identifiable. Frank Coyne, Irish, 38 years, about sft. Bin, grey whiskers, beard and moustache, grey eyes, cocked nose, dressed in black coat, light tweed vest, moleskin trousers and billy-cock hat; and Eobert Newport alias Henry Luke, 26 years, 6ft., stout build, fair complexion, very little hair on face, fair hair, dressed in brown coat and tweed trousers, still in Christchurch—are suspected. ■

Stolen at Halswell, at midnight, 3rd inst., a siver hunting lever watch, name “ Botherham,” No. 20044. Identifiable by owner Joseph Sparks, Quarry Eoad. Frederick Culliford, English, 24 years, 6ft., lanky build, light sandy beard, whiskers and moustache, son of the butcher Culliford, and still at Halswell, is suspected.

Stolen ; on the 7th instant, two common diaper towels, 1 yard x fringed each end red marks lin. wide across towels; a diaper table-cloth 1 yard square, fringed all round, with red stain in one corner, the property of William Coodey, corner of Durham and St. Asaph streets, who suspects Annie Osborne, a prostitute, still in Christchurch, and well known to the police. Identifiable.

Stolen from the person of Bernard McNalty, of Bangor Station, while lying drunk upon the foot-path near the Warwick Hotel, between 9 p.m. and midnight, 31st ult., a silver hunting lever watch, maker—Hill, London, nearly new, initials B. NcN. on back of case ; also a black leather purse, two compartments, fastening with a clasp, containing eight £5 and two £1 notes; watch only indentifiable.

Lost or Stolen from West Melton, between p.m. 4th, and 7 a.m. sth ult, a bay harness mare, 15 hands, 7 years, cob build, bang tail, white star and white , snip on forehead, JE (conjoined, value £2O, bred by Mr. Palmer.mspector ofU.B.A, and bought from J. Stolen from the premises of "Wm. Reeves, Esq., Opawa, between 11 p.m. 3rd, and 8 a.m. 4th inst, eight cream-coloured Brahma fowls, two cocks, and two black Spanish fowls. One Brahma cock and four hens and the Spanish hens have been recovered by the Detective Police in the brewery paddock, Waltham, with their necks broken. Mr. Reeves offers £5 reward for the discovery of the thief.

Lost or stolen, in Christchurch, between 12 noon and 9 p.m. 2nd instant, one £lO note Union Bank of Australia, not identifiable, the property of Bell Reveley, of Kimberley, who was very drunk on that day and was being driven about in cabs.

Identifiable.

Stolen from the Waimate Hotel, between 8 and 12 a.m. 12th instant, a pair of running shoes, with red morocco leather fronts, cut and stars on both sides of each shoe, four spikes in soles of each, filed down, cut open behind and laced up with wax end. Identifiable by the owner, William Delaney, who suspects George Willis, alias Glesson, English, 20 years, sft. 7in., slight build, fair complexion, dressed m drab

tweed suit and hard black felt hat. Supposed to have gone to Timaru.

Theodore Arthur Walsh Griefith, English, labourer, 35 years, sft. 10 or llin., slight build, sallow complexion, dark eyes, black hair, supposed to be turning grey, small dark beard, no whiskers or moustache’ medium forehead, nose, chin, and mouth, small black eyebrows, slovenly gait, Yankee appearance, is charged on warrant, filed in Commissioner’s office, with desertiug his wife, Grace Griffith, at Courtenay, in January, 1875.

Reverting to Police Gazette, 1876, No. 11, page 82, offender George O’Brien Robinson, is reported to have left Lytteltou ‘in the brig “ May Flower,” on the 23rd May last for Adelaide, South Australia. The Police authorities of New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, are requested to, communicate with this department should the whereabouts of the accused be discovered.

Reverting to ' Criminal offence, dated Christchurch, 3rd instant, the warrant of commitment, therein referred to, has been executed upon Thomas Helmes, by Sergeant Wallace, Lincoln Police.

Revesting to Police Gazette 1876, No. 11, page 72, stealing from the dwelling of Thomas Bailey, at Southbridge, it has been ascertained that the woman in company with Mrs. Crowe was Mrs Slade, whose husband pumps water for the engine at Ashburton Railway station.

Reverting to Police Gazette 1876, No. 10, page 74, offender Thomas Musgrave Dighton, has been arrested by Detective Walker, at Timaru.

Reverting to Police Gazette 1876, No. 8, page 60, offender Neil McPhee, has been arrested by the Otago Police, and being

unable to pay the amount due, was- committed to Oamaru gaol for one.month.

Reverting to Police Gazette 1876, No. 11, page 82, offender George Wilson, therein described, has been arrested by Mounted Constable Lamb, Akaroa Polide.

About 11 30 p.m., 3rd instant, an attemp to enter the house of Air. Hyam Davis’ Latimer Square, was made by two men, trying to open the drawing room window, but being disturbed by the servants, they made off before being identified.

Between G and 10 p.m., on the 7th instant, the branch of the Union Bank of Australia, Waimate, was broken into, and an attempt made to break open the safe, with a sledge hammer. The Bank offers a reward of fifty pounds for such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders.

Between B,a.m. and 145 p.m., on .the 11th instant, a new-born female infant was found by some Sunday school scholars, just, inside the Sunday school gates, at Addington, wrapped in flannel and a blanket. The child was alive, but no clue as to its mother has been yet obtained.
