Police Gazette. —Vol. X., No. 4.

Wanted to find an owner for the following property, found under suspicious circum stances early during the last month, in the possession of a notorious thief, John Lewis, alias Lee, at Dunedin. Lewis was discharged from Lyttelton Gfaol on the 12th February, 1872. (See “Discharges” present issue). 1 pair Colonial gold drop earrings, bell pattern, in morocco case, marked on back c/a 134 £2 7s. 6d.; also, a very elegant meerschaum pipe, the stem being a hand holding a pistol, beautiful amber mouthpiece, rim of bowl mounted with Colonial gold. (Criminal Offence Report, dated Dunedin, March 9, 1872).

William Walton is charged on warrant filed in this office, with deserting his wife and family at Woodend, in Kaiapoi District. Description English, 35 years of age, sft. 6in. or 7in. high, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair, whisker, beard, and moustache, long thin nose and blue eyes, usually wears light-coloured tweed suit and soft felt hat; smart appearance, by trade a hawker. It is thought Walton will endeavour to leave the Province. (Criminal Offences, March 11, 1872).

William Lane is charged on warrant with deserting from the ship Harvest Home on the sth ult., in Lyttelton Harbour. Description A native of Hamburgh, about 30 years of age, sft. Bin high, stout build, dark complexion, slight beard and moustache, full round face, speaks English with a foreign accent. (Criminal Offences, March 13, 1872).

On the night of the 15th ult., six stacks of wheat at Shand’s Track, the property of Patrick Henley, were maliciously set on fire and destroyed. The next morning foot marks were traced from the site of the stacks to a gap in the hedge, where a box of matches was found, apparently dropped by the incendiary. (Criminal Offences, March 18, 1872).

Early on the morning of the 10th ult seven stacks, the property of Mair, Brothers’ Upper Washdyke Road, comprised of three of wheat, two of oats, one of barley, and one of oaten hay, were maliciously set fire to and completely destroyed. A neighbouring farmer, William Burrows, who was at dis pute with the Mair, Brothers, is suspected of the act. sft. Bin. high, pale complexion, reddish hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache, generally dresses in grey tweed coat and vest, and brown trousers ; a pianoforte tuner by trade, well educated, and addicted to drink. Is supposed to have gone to Dunedin.

Offender, James Reid, was arrested by the Bealey Police at Kowai Pass, West Coast Road, on the 22nd ult.

Offender, Thomas Edwards (identical with Thomas Warner, see “ Apprehensions ” Canterbury Police Gazette No. 8, 1870), arrested by the Christchurch Police near Ashburton, on the 22nd ult.

[Vide Canterbury Police Gazette No 3, 1872, “ Miscellaneous Information.”] Offender, Robert Tindell, described in the above reference, has been arrested by the Christchurch Police, and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.

Offender, John Austin, therein described, has been arrested in Victoria, and sentenced to six years’ imprisonment.

S. Gr. Weston is charged on warrant with obtaining the moneys of William Owston, in Melbourne, on the 4th January, bymeans of false pretences. Description : English, 26 years of age, sft. 9in. or lOin. high, thin build, fair complexion, clean shaved except moustache, light brown hair smart active gentlemanly appearance, fleshy protuberance on neck and on one side of mouth ; dresses somewhat in sporting style. Believed to have gone to New Zealand.

Edward Morton is charged on warrant with larceny as a bailee at Ballarat. Offender mod a quantity of furniture to furnish the Stag and Hounds Hotel, Ballarat, from Richard Draper, which he sold for £lls on the 30th January, and left Ballara n the Ist February, supposed for Sydnej , New

Zealand. A letter was received in Ballarat from him, dated Melbourne, February 6, 1872. Description : —About 35 years of age, sft. B|in. high, Irish, full eyes which droop at the outside corners, wears spectacles, speaks with a Limerick accent. Arrived from New Zealand last November, when he stated he was employed by the Imperial Government as a surveyor, and that he had applied to the Victorian Government for a similar situation.
