Stolen.
Stolen, about 6 p.m. of the 13th instant, from Captain James Quinn, ship Canute, Lyttelton, an open faced silver lever watch, maker’s name Fox, of Beverly, number not known, one gold plated albert chain and key, imitation Colt’s five chamber revolver, A colored man named Samuel Campbell, suspected, 5 feet 7 inches high, long black woolly hair, slight black moustache, small tuft of beard on the chin, no hair on cheeks, blue dungaree trousers, no boots on, stout build. Identifiable.
Between 11 a.m. and 3.15 p.m. on the 2nd instant, during the absence of the owner, an entrance was effected into the dwelling house of Robert Brown, Richmond Quay, Greymouth, and four £5 notes stolen therefrom, bank and Nos. unknown. James Dunn alias Williamson suspected ; Irishman, 35 years old, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, whiskers, beard, and moustache, Jewish appearance, good address, a shoemaker, dressed in dark coat, dark tweed trousers and vest, black felt hat; well known to the police as a professional thief. Still in Grreymouth.
Stolen, between 9.30 and 11.30 p.m. of the 11th ult., from Bella Ingles, Revell-street, Hokitika, four hair brushes, two with square, and two with oval backs, the hair and backs white. A prostitute known as Pretty Lizzy suspected ; about 26 years old, 5 feet 1 inch high, brown hair short and curly, fresh complexion. Still in Hokitika. Brushes identifiable.
Stolen, between 9 p.m. and 10.30 p.m. of the 27th nit., from Henry Solomon, jun., Timaru, a portmanteau 18 inches long, made of bullock hide, tan color ; stamped “ Warranted real leather,” on outside; Mr. Solomon’s private mark in pencil mark on the lining of one of the compartments. Value £1 15s.
During the day of the 13th ultimo an entrance was effected into the dwelling of Mrs Jane Rannie, Prebbletown, while absent from home, and the following articles stolen: one silver verge watch, open faced, with small piece of cotton lace attached, maker’s name and number unknown ; one silver geneva hunting watch, with second hand broken off, and a round locket containing hair attached by small silver chain ; one open-faced verge watch, with a small piece broken off the dial near the figure 5. All identifiable.
During the night of the 30th ultimo an entrance was effected into the store of John Harris, Werita-street, Greymouth, and four hams (Sinclair’s) stolen therefrom, value £5. Not identifiable.
Stolsn, about the 14th of March, fro™ a church Gresson-street, Greymouth, the property of Henrv James, a Church of England Bible, about 12 inches Jong and 9 broad, bound with brown morocco leather having the words “ To Henry and Jane James, by one who wishes them well,” written on the flv leaf Value £l. Identifiable.
Stolen, between 11 a.m. on the 24th, and 7 p.m. on the 25th ultimo, from Johnston-street, Gfreymouth, a colonial gold brooch, two inches long, rim formed of small leaves, large leaf inlaid with three garnets in centre, works on a hinge, place inside brooch for a portrait, pin broken —value £6 10s.—the property of Elizabeth Bartholomew. Greymouth. A Mrs. Flinn suspected, 35 years old, 5 feet 2 inches high, blue eyes, snub nose, medium mouth, good teeth, dark liair ; a washerwoman; still in Greymouth. Brooch identifiable.
About 8 a.m. on the 30th ultimo, a storekeeper named Charles Meeham was proceeding to Greymouth, on the track between Saltwater Creek and New River, and when about three miles from the latter place, he observed a man leaning against the fence of a deserted stockyard with a revolver in his hand. On seeing this Meeham got off the track, when he was fired at, and at the same time another man who came out of the bush, followed him for about 150 yards, and fired three shots at him, none of which took effect, Meeham had on his person 52 ozs. of gold, and £240 sterling. He can only describe these men as having had their faces blackened, were without coats, and that one of them wore a reddish colored shirt. No suspicion attached to any person.
