The 28th Heavy News was a fortnightly typewritten camp magazine published by the 28th Heavy Antiaircraft (AA) Regiment in New Caledonia between 1942-1943 during World War II.
Printed in a mostly humorous manner and ‘published without care or responsibility by the editors Padre Murray and Sergeant Lord at their office in Niaouli Chambers’ (25 December 1942: 6) the 28th Heavy News featured songs, hand drawn cartoons, jokes, social and local sporting news as well as reflections on camp life and life being stationed in New Caledonia. Paper was in short supply and the camp had limited printing facilities available, meaning there were only a limited number of issues available.
While it is not clear whether the issue from March 1943 was indeed the last issue, the 28th Heavy AA Regiment was disbanded in 1943 and the bulk of personnel were transferred to the Artillery Training Depot (ATD). Given this, the 28th Heavy News may have been replaced by the ATD’s own magazine The Arty AnTiDote.
