WEDNESDAY* JULY 2ND, 1856. House in Committee of Ways and Means. Financial. Motion made and question proposed, That the following Resolution be recommended to the House for adoption : — " That in the event of the financial scheme of the Government failing from inability to obtain the necessary loan of £500,000, the loan of £200,000 offered by the Home Government for liquidation of the New Zealand Company's Debt shall be raised on the terms proposed, and the mode of payment shall stand over foi adjustment amongst the several Provinces at a future period. (Mr. Fitzherbert.) Amendment proposed, That the words after the word « over" in the fourth line be omitted. (The QutTn-TlT t t e h r e ) words proposed to be omitted do stand part of the question, put and negatived- ThaUhe . on be amended by the addition of the following words, »as part of a general adjustment of the public burdens, it being an essential part of such adjustment that the Land Fund shall be exonerated from its special liability to the purchase of Native Lands, as: well as from the New Zealand Company's Debt, and that in accordance wUh a former reso ut.on of this House the Province of Auckland shall be relieved retrospectively, as wellas prospectively, from any SntrTbu on towards the liquidation of that debt, the purchase-money of Native Lands being provided w 'lther bvT cheme of consolidated burdens, or by a distinct appropriation of specific portions of such burdens to the respective Provinces, upon the principles affirmed in former resolutions of tin* House."
