ORDER OF REFERENCE. Extract from the Journals of the House, of Representatives. Tuesday, the 3kd Day of December, 1918. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions from M to Z that may be referred to it by the Petitions Classification Committee, to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House, and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon to this House; also to have power to call for persons and papers; three to be a quorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. Bollard, Mr. Craigie, Mr. Dickie, Mr. J. McC. Dickson, Mr. J. S. Dickson, Mr. MeCallum, Mr. Mander, Mr. Poole, Mr. Statham, and tho Mr. Hanan.)

No. 1 of Session 11, 1918.—Petition of W. S. Maclntosh, of Hedgehope, Southland. Praying for compensation for disabilities sustained in the Boer War. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, with a view to petitioner being granted a compassionate allowance in the form of a weekly, payment of ,£1 per week. sth December, 1918.

No. 12 of Session I, 1918.—Petition of H. L. Wortiiington, of Petone. I'raying for the enforcement, of a certain Order in Council and compensation. I am directed to report that, having regard to the Prime' Minister's statement to petitioner in his letter of the 6th April last —that he was advised by the Colonial Office, in effect, that there was nothing in the Paris Sanitary Convention, 1912, to prevent the enforcement of the New Zealand Order in Council of the 3rd April, 1913—the Committee is of opinion that such Order should be given effect to forthwith, and therefore refers the petition to the Government for favourable consideration. sth December, 1918.

No. 4 of Session TI, .1918. —Petition of Oliver Mewhinney, of Wellington. Praying for a refund of legal expenses and compensation for imprisonment. T am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration and inquiry. sth December, 1918.

No. 17 of Session 11, 1918.—Petition of Albert Plummkk, of Auckland. Praying for compensation for loss on a contract with the Government. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 6th December, 1918.

No. 30 of Session I, 1918.—Petition of J. G. Westren, of Auckland, and 1,511 Others. Praying for a Board of Inquiry into the cause of certain flooding of property at Mount Albert, Auckland. I am directed to report that, the grievance the subject of this petition having been remedied to the satisfaction of petitioners, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 6th December, 1918.

No. 127 of Session 11, 1918.—Petition of John Maoka'y, of Wellington. Praying for compensation for loss of furlough. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 9th December, 1918.

No. 89 of Session 11, 1918.—Petition of C. W. Stephenson, of Wellington. Praying for an inquiry into his dismissal from the Post and Telegraph Department. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 9th December, 1918.

No. 3 of Session 11, 1918.—Petition of Elizabeth Rutledge, of Riverhead, Auckland. Praying for a compassionate allowance on account of the services rendered by her late husband while he was in the New Zeal and- Police Force. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 9th December, 1918.

I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make, petitioner not having exhausted her legal remedies. _ 9th December, 1918.

No. 13 of Session 11, 1918.—Petition of Charles H. Nioholls, of Kaikoura. Praying for compensation for the loss of his launch. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the hearing of this petition must be adjourned to next session, the Defence Department not having yet supplied the Committee with its report on the petition. 9th December, 1918.
