ORDER OF REFERENCE. Extract from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Friday, the Bth Day of October, 1909. Ordered, " That a Committee bo appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions from M to Z that may be referred to it by the Petitions Classification Committee, to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House ; and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereupon to this House ; also to have power to call for persons and papers ; three to bo a quorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. Buchanan, Mr. Buxton, Mr. Colvin, Mr. Craigie, Mr. J. PETITIONERS pray for a sum of £200 to finish the road from Whangaripo creamery to Wellsford Station. 1 am directed to report that the petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 4th November, 1909. Petitioner prays for compensation for loss of her son, William Hay Rennie, who was murdered at Papakaio. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make on this petition. 4th November, 1909. No. (Hi, Session ll.—Petition of Mrs. Margaret Stewart and Others, of Kaiwaka, Auckland. Petitioners pray for compensation for damage by fire alleged to have been caused by a survey party under the charge of a District Engineer in the employ of the Public Works Department, whereby a kauri bush was destroyed. I am directed to report that in the opinion of this Committee the Crown Suits Act should be waived with a view of the petitioners being afforded the opportunity of testing the justice of their claim. 10th November, 1909. No. ISS, Session II. —Petition of Henry Palmer and 7 Others, of the Taieri District, Otago. PETITIONERS pray for inquiry into and redress for certain grievances in connection with the drainage of the Taieri Plain. Petitioner prays for redress for alleged wrongful dismissal from the position of Deputy Official Assignee at Timaru, in July, 1892. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make in respect to the prayer of this petition. 18th November, 1909. No. 29, Session ll.—Petition of Patrick Madigan, of Auckland. Petitioner prays that he may be relieved from the liability of supporting a child at present an inmate of St. Mary's Industrial School at Auckland. 1 am directed to report that in the opinion of this Committee the petition should be referred to the Education Committee. 18th November, 1909. No. 9, Session ll.—The New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Distributing Company (Limited), of Allen Street, Wellington. PETITIONERS pray for relief in respect to alleged damage caused to property from coaldust from the State Coal Depot, Wellington. I am directed to report that in the opinion of this Committee the Government be recommended to refer the matter to arbitration for the purpose of ascertaining the damage (if any) the company is entitled to. 19th November, 1909. No. 155.—Petition of John Ward, of Lower Hutt, settler. Petitioner prays that legislation may be introduced for the purpose of protecting tenants from liability for rates in certain cases. I am directed to report that this Committee is of opinion that the question of introducing legislation to secure redress in this case and similar cases should be recommended to the Oovcrnment for favourable consideration. 7th December, 1909. No. 280.—Petition of Walter Martin, of Erinwood, Seafield, near Ashburton. Petitioner prays for further compensation for loss of office as Chief Clerk in the Stipendiary Magistrate's Court at Christchurch. 1 am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 7th December, 1909. No. 33. —Petition of Mrs. Florence B. Rolfe, of College Street, Wellington. Petitioner prays for compensation for assault committed by two constables whilst in plain clothes. No. 616, of 1908. —Petition of Robert Troup, of Waikawa Valley, Invercargill. Petitioner prays for an inquiry into financial dealings between Irven Willis Raymond, of Invercargill, and petitioner. I am directed to report that, in view of the fact that the Government is going to authorise Magistrates or other Commissioners during the recess to inquire into the claims of old soldiers, this Committee recommends that inquiry be made into the petitioner's claim by the Commission. 13th December, 1909. No. 136.—Petition of James Methers and Another, of Port Chalmers. Petitioners pray for compensation for the loss of their son, who was drowned whilst proceeding to a Volunteer camp. I am directed to report that this petition be referred to the Government for consideration. 13th December, 1909. Nos. 35, 266, 377, and 447. —Petitions of William Stewart and Others, A. G. MacKenzie and Others, William Simpson and Others, and George T. Clendon and Others, all residents of Hokianga County. Petitioners pray that an extension of the Whangarei—Kawakawa Railway to Kaikohe be included in this year's Authorisation Bill.
