ANNUAL KELOBTS OF DOMAIN BOAKDS. The Under-Secretary for Lands to the Hon. the Minister of Lands. Sir, — Department of Lands, Wellington, 7th August, 1908. I have the honour to transmit herewith a synopsis of the annual reports of Domain Boards for the year ended 31st December, 1907. The reports are furnished in compliance with the provisions of section 7 of " The Domain Boards Act, 1904." Quite a number of these important reserves have now reached a high state of perfection, and it is evident that the large majority are being steadily improved and made more suitable for public use and enjoyment. The whole of the members of the various Domain Boards throughout the Dominion do not, however, as yet quite recognise their responsibilities under the Act in the matter of furnishing reports. Out of 440 Domain Boards 28 have failed to furnish the details required by law. No doubt, as the centres in which the domains are situated become more densely populated, the Boards will be encouraged in their work of popularising the several resorts, and will gladly see the results of their care and sacrifice of time and money embodied in the reports to be laid before Parliament. Particulars of the domains on which no reports have been received will be found on pages 39 and 40. It may not be out of place to mention thai the Auditor-General has called attention to the fact that a number of the Domain Boards are credited with considerable overdraft* at their banks, and that apparently they are paying interest upon such overdrafts out of current revenue, a practice which the Auditor-General considers is not strictly legal. The photographs embodied in the report have been kindly furnished by the Domain Boards whose name is entered against them. AUCKLAND LAND DISTRICT. Arawa Park Domain. Section No. 23, Rotorua Rural Sections. Area, 46 acres 3 roods 17 perches. Improvements now on domain: Fences, grandstand, and racing-track. An area is being ploughed, levelled, and sown down in grass for football grounds. Used for races and sports. Proposed operations for ensuing year : Renovating grandstand. Auckland Domain. Situated in Rangitoto Survey District. Area, 236 acres 1 rood. Work done during year: General improvements and maintenance. Improvements now on domain: Extensive plantations, boundary-fences, iron fences, and stone wall surrounding the cricket-ground, pavilion, Park Superintendent's house, gardener's cottage, caretaker's lodge, and a propagating-house. Used for grazing, picnics, cricket, athletic purposes, and general recreation. Avondalh Domain. Section No. 361, Waikomiti Parish. Area, 38 acres 2 roods. No improvements effected during the year. Improvements now on domain: Boundary-fence (out of repair), plantation, and 6 acres in grass. Used for camping. Proposed operations for ensuing year: Erecting and repairing fences, and forming a track to the beach. The domain has been leased on improvement conditions. Awhittj Domain. Section No. 58c, Awhitu Parish. Area, 8 acres 3 roods 30 perches. Leased on improvement conditions. Improvements now on domain : Thirty-one chains fencing and grassing. Used for sports and picnics. Birkenhead Domain. Section No. 122, Takapuna Parish. Area, 112 acres 2 roods. Six acres leased for grazing. Improvements now on domain : Fences and plantations. I—C. 10.

Buffalo Domain. Sections Nos. 31 and 32, Village of Buffalo. Area, 20 acres 1 rood 39 perches. Work done during year : Eleagnus planted on Cemetery Road, and boundary and wire fence altered to give horses access to water. Improvements now on domain : Fences, eleagnus hedge, and gates. Used for general recreation. Proposed operations for ensuing year : Erecting wire and picket fences. The Board also proposes to drain the swamp on the domain. Cambridge Domain. Sections Nos. 576, 359, 360, 361, 361a, 367, 581, 578, 579, 363, 363a, 364, 365, 366, 368, 370, Town of Cambridge East, and the Cambridge East Town Belt. Area, 484 acres 1 rood 7 perches. Work done during year : Band-stand erected, noxious weeds eradicated, and general maintenance and improvements. A number of English Mallard wild-ducks presented to the Board have been liberated on the lake. Improvements now on domain : Band-stand, bowling-green, tenniscourts, pavilion, fences, trees, flower-beds, and conveniences. Used for bowls, tennis, band concerts, and general recreation : also used, as a promenade. Proposed operations for ensuing year: Maintaining tennis-courts, planting native trees, ferns, and shrubs, and providing extra accommodation for the tennis clnb. Gas is being laid on to the band-stand, and it is the intention of the Board to erect two lamps on the northern and western walks of the Lake Reserve. During the year a fire from adjoining grounds spread into the domain, and a number of trees were destroyed. Cambridce West Domain. Cambridge West Town Belt. Area, 333 acres 2 roods. Work done during year: Trees planted, hedges trimmed, noxious weeds removed, fences repaired, and trees attended to. Improvements now on domain : Fences, ornamental and shelter trees, and 3 acres plantation. Used for sports, tennis, and cricket; a portion is leased for grazing. Proposed operations for ensuing year : Constructing concrete bath, planting trees, and general maintenance. Casxell Island Domain. Section No. 196, Mahurangi Parish. Area, 16 acres 3 roods. No improvements effected. Used for camping and picnics. Devonport Domain. Allotments Nos. 36, 37, and 39 of Section No. 2, and Mount Victoria Reserve, Takapuna Parish. Area, 41 acres 2 roods 36 perches. Work done during year : Cricket-pitches weeded, top-dressed, levelled, and rolled ; ground cleaned up and rolled; tennis-eround, bowling-green, and croquet-lawns top-dressed and rolled, and noxious weeds on Mount Victoria cut down and removed. Improvements now on domain: Fences, drains, sanitarv arrangements, plantations, seats, and pavilions. Used for cricket, bowls, football, tennis, croquet, and hockey. From Mount Victoria a beautiful view of Auckland and its surroundings is obtained. The mount is used both as a pleasure and scenic resort. Proposed operations for ensuing year : Top-dressing and levelling cricket-eround, keeping grounds in order, and forming a footpath and dressing it with fine scoria and shell. Drurt Domain. Allotment No. 85 of Section 8, Village of Drury. Area, 3 acres and 32 perches. Leased. Improvements now on domain: Fencing, clearing, and ploughing. East Tamaki Domain. Sections Nos. 140 and 40, Pakuranga Parish. Area, 18 acres 1 rood 35 perches. Work done during year: Noxious weeds eradicated, fences repaired, and an area ploughed and levelled in readiness for sowing down in grass. Improvements now on domain: Fences, plantations, and dam. Used for picnics; also for grazing. Proposed operations for ensuing vear : Eradicating noxious weeds, planting shrubs and trees, ploughing, cultivating, and sowing down an area in grass, and repairing fences. Eastern Mahurangi Domain. Section No. 176, Parish of Mahurangi. Area, 108 acres and 15 perches. The domain comprises broken land, covered with tea-tree scrub. No improvements have been effected. Epsom and Mount Eden Domain. Part of Allotment No. 46, .Allotment No. 49, and part of Allotment No. 48, of Section No. 6, Suburbs of Auckland. Area, 29 acres 3 roods 16 perches. Leased. Gate Pa Domain. Work done during year: New tanks procured and new baths placed in the bath-house and a drive to the bath-house formed. Improvements now on domain : Fences, bath-house, and drive. Used for bathing and as a pleasure resort. Proposed operations for ensuing year: Erecting a sanatorium, with baths, for invalids; constructing a swimming-bath; and generally beautifying the domain. Hoteo Domain. Section No. 34b, Block XII, Pakiri Survey District. Area, 16 acres 1 rood 5 perches. No works yet undertaken. Board appointed 9th September, 1907. Howick Domain. Suburban Sections Nos. 141 to 148, Town of Howick. Area, 8 acres. Work done during year : Hedges trimmed, pavilion completed, urinal erected, tile drain extended, and small swing gate erected at main entrance in place of the large gate, which was removed to south-western corner. This corner has been fenced off for visitors' horses. Improvements now on domain : Thirty-six chains fencing, 67 chains drains, two pavilions, gates, tenniscourts, and conveniences. Used for picnics and athletic sports; also for sheep-grazing. Proposed operations for ensuing year : Completing tile drains, erecting swings, and levelling and improving the domain. Kaiwaka Domain. During the year the baths have been kept in good order, and the sanitary arrangements carried out satisfactorily, with the result thai enormous yields of marram-grass have been obtained Repairs to concrete walls and platform have been effected, and a fence erected on the sea-wall from Beach Street to the baths, thus affording protection to cyclists and pedestrians. The pile groins at St. Clair continue to do good work, and no portion of the foreshore has been washed away for at least seven years. Fencing has been continued from Tahuna Park to the Tomahawk Road boundary to protect the grass and lupin plantations, and 40 chains of scrub fencing has been erected for the purpose of arresting drift sand, with a view to filling in the low-lying parts of the lagoon off St. Kilda. Lupins continue to spread, and are rapidly covering the whole of the sandhills. Patches burnt off in 1907 were renewed with seedlings, and are now covered with vegetation from 3 ft. to 6 ft, high. The track opposite Moreau Street has been improved, and the one opposite the Queen's Drive is being raised and covered with rock for a further distance of about 3 chains. The bandrotunda has been completed, enclosed with a fence, and the enclosure turfed. Otokia Domain. Section No. 47, Block I, Otokia Survey District. Area, 12 acres 2 roods. Proposed operations for ensuing year : Erecting fences and planting trees. Tokomairiro Domain. Parts of Sections Nos. 103 and 104, Block XII, Tokomairiro Survey District. Area, 59 acres 2 roods 30 perches. Work done during year : Unsightly trees removed, a large portion of the area laid off and planted, footpaths formed, swimming-pond constructed, planted portions surrounded by wirenetting, and llower-beds and pots stocked. Improvements now on domain : Fences, plantations, pavilion, drains, ponds, and paths. I'sed for football and cricket. Manuka or Pigeon Island, Crescent or Rabbit Island, the island in Stevenson's Arm, and Merino or Roy's Island, all in Lake Wanaka; Sections Nos. 1, Block XIII, and 29, Block XIV, Lower Wanaka Survey District, and Sections Nos. 1 to 4, Block XIV, 1 to 3, Block XV, 1 to 6 and 8 to 14, Block XVI, and 1 to 16, Block XVII, Town of Pembroke. Area, 1,007 acres 2 roods 30 perches. Four hundred acres leased on improvement conditions. Work done during the year: Wharf on Ruby Island completed, hut built on Manuka Island, and Manuka Island wharf extended and repaired. Improvements now on domain: Fences, wharves, buildings, rabbit-proof netting, and tracks. Used for sports, picnics, sanctuary for birds, and generally for the gratification of the lovers of the beautiful in nature. The Wanaka Steam Shipping Company runs steamers to the islands in Lake Wanaka almost daily during the tourist season. Proposed operations for ensuing year: Planting trees, forming roads and tracks, and general improvements. Wangaloa Domain. Part of Section No. 8, Block VII, Coast Survey District. Area, 32 acres 3 roods 13 perches. Improvements now on domain : Fences, drains, and plantations. Used for picnics and sports. Willsher Domain. Sections Nos. 1, 3, and 4 of 16, and an intersecting road-line, Block VII, South Molyneux Survey District. Area, 14 acres and 39 perches. A portion of this domain is now laid out as an ornamental garden. Improvements now on domain : Fences, pavilions, plantation, and garden. Used for sports, football, bowls, tennis, and as a pleasure resort. A permanent gardener is employed. Hirstfield Domain. Sections Nos. 1, Block X, 4, Block XI, and 1, Block XVII, Town of Hirstfield. Area, 23 acres and 24 perches. Work done during year: Hedges trimmed, fences, gates, and conveniences erected, and entrance to sports-ground improved. Proposed operations for ensuing year : Trimming hedges and maintaining sportsground. Howell's Point Domain.
