SECRET WEDDING

GENERAL SIR JOHN DILL

MARIiIES SOLDIER’S WIDOW

Secret arrangements, which actually prevented some of the guests from arriving in time, surrounded the wedding of General Sir John Dill and Mra. Nancy Furlong, which took place recently at St. Stephen’s Church, Rochester Row, London- The wedding took place at noon, but two hours later several cars drew up alongside the church, and some high army officials found the service was over. More than 75 people, including Mr. Anthony Eden and Sir Charles Portal, got there in time for the ceremony.

General Sir John Dill’s first wife died last December. Mrs. Furlong, who is fourteen years younger than her husband, is the widow of Brigadied Dennis Furlong, who died on military duties in September 1940. He was awarded the D.S.O. for gallantry in June of the same year. Since the war Mrs, Furlong has been serving with the Military Transport Corps, with which body she was in France, when she had a narrow escape from capture by the Germans during the evacuation. Her home is in Sand gate, Kent, and for the past six months she has been attached to the mobile section of Folkestone Police. There she has earned a reputation for bravery during air aids. She has driven through every blitz, and has never failed to be on duty during an alert.

Sir John has been Chief of the Imperial Staff since last year and will relinquish this post shortly with (he rank of field-marshal. He will become Governor of Bombay.
