Mrs. F. Fitzwater is at present on a Adsit to Wellington. Mr, H. A. Boswell is on a business visit to Wellington. Mrs, S. M. McGaughey has return, ed from a holiday in Feilding. Mr. and Mrs. V. Shutte have been visiting friends in Patea. Mrs. J. R. Hunger has returned_ from a holiday spent in Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. J. D, Cameron have returned from a holiday in Hawke’s Bay. Miss L. Allen, Alton, was the guest of Miss M. Mawhinney over the weekend. Mrs McKenzie, who been the guest of Mrs. L. Honeyfield, left on Monday for Wellington on her return to Geraldine, South Canterbury. The death of the Rev. Charles William Gordon, who was known under the pen-name of Ralph Connor, is re. ported from Winnipeg. Mr. W. G. P. Ingley, of the Customs Department, Wellington, and formerly of Patea, has received notice of his transfer to Nelson. Advice has been received of the death at Hamncr Hospital on Monday of Dr. H. D. Hayes, aged 38, medical superintendent of the Seacliff Mental Hospital. Mr. A. E. Washer, New Plymouth, and formerly of Alton, has been re. elected chairman of the executive of the North Taranaki boys’ and girls’ agricultural clubs. H© has held the position for 1G years. Mr. F. J. Carter is to retire at the end of the year as treasurer of the Wellington Anglican Diocese. He took office on April 1, 1901, and thus has given 33 years’ service to the Church. His retirement will be widely regretted. Mr. Alex Hunter, of Hawera, will judge the beef Shorthorn classes at the Royal ShoAV to be held at Palmerston North next month; Mr. A. BoAven, of Stratford, will be one of the judges in the SouthdoAvn sheep classes, and Mr. A Ogle, of Normanby, Avill judge the Berkshire and Tamworth pigs.

The death took place at her residence, Middlesex Street, on Monday of Mrs. Bessie Johnston, a very old and highly respected settler and mother of Mr. T. Johnston of Waverley and Misses B. and J. Johnston of Patea. The deceased lady has been in failing health for some 'Considerable time past, but appeared somewhat better during the last few days. She however took a turn for the worse during Monday morning and passed away as above stated. 'The funeral, which was a pri. vato one, took place yesterday. The “Sports Post" says that Mrs. Eay Whitehead, formerly Miss Euth Findlay, of Upper Hutt, and of Patea, may be a lass with a delicate air, but she has an intrepid spirit for all that. Or perhaps it was love of adventure that prompted Euth, a couple of years ago, to dodge the conventional round of engagement and pre-wiedding parties ind elope with Eay Whitehead, the young aviator who crossed the Tasman with Eex Nichol. Now, Eiithi, living up to her name for doing the unexpected, has materialised from New Guinea with a small daughter, -Sally, on a sur. prise visit to her parents in Upper Hutt, what time husband Eay is engaged with a temporary air contract in Southern China. :
