PATEA HARBOUR BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The ordinary monthly meeting of the Pa tea Harbour Board was held on Tuesday, Mr. A. Pearce presiding. Messrs G. Mculi, W. Back and W. H. Watkins were also present. CORRESPONDENCE The secretary of the Department of Labour wrote stating that because of time lost through wet weather the wage returns from full-time work were reduced to a tigure n little above /thp Scheme 5 rate, and to meet the position to a reasonable degree, it ,Ims been decided that men engaged by an employing authority full-time work subsidised from the Employment Promotion Fund under Scheme 13, shall, where practicable, be granted extra employment beyond the originally allotted period until they shall have had opportunity of working additional time equivalent to that lost through wet weather, except that the minimum ex. tra period shall be one week.

ITARBOUR.M ASTER’S REPORT The harbour-master, Captain W. E. Barnes, reported for the month ending 31st October, 1937, that shipping was fair until the latter end of the month, when strong westerlies set in. There were 19 arrivals and sixteen de. parture.s for the month. The bar entrance was .sounded on October 20th and the river on October 10th.

The dredge Wallace operated at berths and viaduct as required. A certain amount of leakage Avas going through the Eastern Avail, which requires immediate attention. Abnormally high spring tides imped, cd tho Avork at Oakley A Point, and this Avork cannot now be completed in the allotted time. Furthermore, the distance is nearly double that which at first proposed. The signal station was in good AA rorking order. Captain Barnes also stated that on October 18t,h, in company with Mr. Southcombe and Mr. Back, he went to Waitara to inspect the launch "■Reliance,” A report will be furnished.

DEPUTATION A deputation from the local Avater. side workers, consisting of Messrs F. Stanford and G. Willis, waiting on the board with a view to obtaining improA’ements in their shelter-shed. It Avas decided that the local com. mittee inspect the ishelter.shed with power to act. It was suggested that lockers would meet the men’is need. GENERAL It. Avas decided that arrangements bo made to secure a temporary overdraft of £I,OOO. The chairman reported that the Borough and County Councils had been approached regarding the erosv) i af the Beach, and both bad agreed that they would give moral but not financial support. It was decided that application be made to the unemployment authority for four unemployed men to work on the eastern Wall, and, as the work is subject to weather conditions, tho men could do other work- for f he board tilx the weather improves.

There being no further business the board rose.
