FIRE AT WAITARA

CHIEF'S HOUSE

Minor damage was caused to the homo of Mr. Kahu Mcremia, chief of tho Manukorihi pa, at Waitara yesterday afternoon when a fire broke out in the kitchen. Several thousand Maoris were lined round the marae for tire, arrival of King Koroki and the Waikatos when a sudden call of fire .startled a quiet and orderly crowd. Within a minute of the alarm the, fire bell was sounding and a continued blast of the whistle at Borthwick’s (works called but the Waitara fire brigade. In the meantime the Maori camp police supervised the removal of furniture and effects the entire contents being cleared in a few minutes. Parts of the roof iug had been removed when a lead from the brigade extinguished the fixe.
