EIGHTH BIRTHDAY PARTY,
The Patca Girl Guides’ Association celebrated its eighth anniversary on Monday evening last, when some 140
Guides, Brownies, and /visitors sat down to a. delicious tea. The tables had been most tastefully decorated with chrysanthemums in a. deep shade of pink by Miss Eleanor Hamcrton and presented a very attractive appearance. Among the visitors was Mrs. J. Houston Divisional Commissioner, of Hawera, with four officers of the Hawera Company, the' president aud officers of the Alton Company, Scoutmaster Pauling and M*' s - Pauling, Cubmistresses E. Williams and «G. Kelly, and Rev. H. B. Burnett,

Before the commencement of tea His Worship the Mayor and. Mayoress cut a giant “birthday cake,” consisting of 70 Guides and Brownies, complete with eight candles, the children being dressed in white -crepe paper capes, with pink hoods, aud being arranged iu the form of a cake.
Mrs. Ramsbottom, president, said she had much pleasure on behalf of the committee in extending a hearty welcome to all present on the occasion of the eighth birthday, and hoped all would spend a happy evening. On behalf of the committee, she wished the Guides and Brownies “Many happy returns of the day," and took the opportunity of thanking the officers, Mrs. Prescott, Miss Hamcrton, Miss Kuhfuss, Miss Hunger, Miss Bond, and Miss Edwards, for their sterling and unselfish work for the girls during the year. Bhe also thanked one and all who had helped in any way to make the past year such a happy and successful one, and trusted that the coming year would be just as full of happy interest for all. Grace was then sung, and the good things enjoyed. The Guide cake, made and presented by Mrs. Ranisbottom, was lit by Guide Minnie Coad, blown) out by Guide Margaret Nuismith, and cut by the Divisional Commissioner, avlio wished the girls a happy birthday and hoped that they Avould go forward to even better Avork this year. The Brownie eako was particularly attractive Avith a large kcAvpio and a host of 'little kewpies Avith brown mushroom decorations and eight little candles, was made and presented by the Brown Owl, Miss Hamcrton, and iced by Miss CoAvie, and was cut by Miss T. Gibson.
His Worship the Mayor, in a happy speech, wished the Guides and Brownies “Many happy returns of the day,'' and paid a tribute to the work of the committee and officers, and also to Mr, W. T. Lamb, who had taken a keen and practical interest in the movement for many years. (Applause.) His Worship referred to the regret felt by all at Miss Lydia Bond's resignation a.s Lieutenant, Miss Bond having started with the company as a Brownie. On behalf of the committee he presented her with a picture with best wishes for the future. He also presented a silver cup, awarded to the best, all-round Guide during the year, and a marquetry cup, surmounted with a replica of the Guide badge, to 'Guido Yvonne Close, amid applause. The runners-up for the cup were Guides Minnie Goad and Phyllis Hcrmon.
Mrs. Prescott, Guide Captain, also paid a tribute to Miss Bond’s good work, and presented her with a gift from the company, amid applause. Mrs Prescott also thanked Mrs. Ramsbottom for the fine birthday cake, the committee, and all who had helped the Guides in any way during the year.
The Divisional Commissioner then addressed the children on the Guide movement, its internationalism, and its work for peace between nations, by means of greater underotanding. She asked them to remember the Guide law and the worthy citizens. She expressed her appreciation of Miss Bond's work, and concluded with good wishes for many more happy birthdays. Miss Hauicrton, Brown Owl, thanked Miss Kenworthy for her donation of a prize for the best Brownie during the year, this having been won by Cynthia Simmons, whilst Noelinc Johnston had been the best small Brownie. Who also thanked Mr. Hamcrtou for his kindness to the Brownies throughout the year, Miss Cowic for Icing the Brownie cake, and nil who had helped them in any way.
Good wishes were extended to the companies by the Rev. H. B. Burnett, the Alton Girl Guides’ Association, ►Scoutmaster Pauling, Mr. W. T. Lamb, Mr. \V. Bond, and Mrs. R. W. Haddow, the hitter expressing the appreciation of the Brownies’ mothers for the beautiful cake made by the Brown Owl and her work for the children. She appealed to mothers to join the association by paying the 2s (id subscription and thus helping them in their good work. Badges were presented by the Divisional Commissioner as follows; BROWNIES. The parades have been well attended during the year. Five Guides haA - e not missed one Aveekly or church parade, and others ha\ - e only missed through sickness.
