OBITUARY
ME. J. E. COEEIGAN.
The death took place yesterday at his residence, ‘ ‘ The Oaks, ’ ’ Hawera, of Mr. J. E. Corrigan, one of the bestknown figures in public life in South Taranaki for many years. The deceased, who was (J!) 3’ears of age, was born at Woodend, Canterbury, and like the late Mr. Massey served for some time on the well-known Longbeach Station. After some years spent in farming operations in Canterbury, Mr. Corrigan came to Hawera in 1893, and was for some time engaged in stock dealing in Southern Taranaki in partnership with the late Mr. A. A. Eantham. Later he devoted himself to stock breeding and dairying, in which he was eminently successful. Mr. Corrigan was always a keen sportsman, and was the owner of many well-known trotting horses, notably Man o' War, winner of two Auckland Cups, 'Great Hope, a Xcw Zealand Cup winner, First Carbine, Worthy Queen, jKohara, Sister Beatrice, and others. Mr. Corrigan had a lung record of public service in the district, having been a director of the Hawera Dairy Company for 28 .years, during the last 10 of which he was chairman. He also represented Patea in Parliament from 1922 to 1925, when he was defeated by the present member, Mr. H. G. Dickie. Amongst other positions he filled were those of chairman of directors of the Eltham B.ox Company, director since .1911 and chairman since 1922 of the South Taranaki Winter Show Company, director and former chairman of the New Zealand Eenaet Company, Eltham, chairman of the West Coast Refrigerating Company, Patea, director of the South Taranaki Shipping Company, Patea, member of the executive of the Taranaki Dairy Factories’ Employers’ Association, foundation member of the executive of the Taranaki Federation of Co-opera-tive Dairy Factories and a foundation director of the Farmers' Co-op. Organisation Society. In addition, Mi'. Corrigan was for six years, from 1929 to 1932, a member of the New Zealand Dairy Produce Board. He is survived by his widow and a family of one son, Mr. A. J. Corrigan, HavVcra, and two daughters, Mrs. If. Nowell, Ngaerc, and Miss Dorothy Corrigan, Hawera, and Mrs. S. A. Cldsholm, foster daughter, for whom the deepest sympathy will bo felt. The funeral leaves ‘‘The Oaks” this afternoon at 2.30 o’clock for the Hawera Cemetery.
