THE FORMER PLAN MODIFIED. PAYMENT ON FLOOR SPACE. ,'Jhc building subsidy scheme is to be revived by the Unemploymenl Board on a modified basis. The subsidy will be paid at the rate of Is a square foot of floor space, with a maximum subsidy of 8 per cent, of the contract price, or £BO.. Ordinary industrial conditions arc to be observed on the work, and the Unemployment Board reserves the right to refuse a subsidy in cases where the contract price exceeds £IOOO. In announcing the revival of the scheme in the House, Mr.- Hamilton said the estimated shortage of houses in New Zealand amounted to ’O,OOO. The Unemployment Board would cooperate with the local bodies in clearing slum areas and rebuilding on mod era lines.
