GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE

STRONG AUCKLAND PROTEST. The incursion of the Government Printer into tho licit! of exercise book and pad manufacture was the subject of further protests at a meeting of the cou'.ucil of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, when a letter was received from a city printing linn comp’ lining that it had failed to obtain a renewal of certain private educational printing orders as a result of the Government Printer cutting prim's. The president, Mr. A. G. Lunn, said it was obvious that if the Government Printing Department cut prices it would get orders. Mr. Harvey Turner; The Department pays no taxes and competes with private linns which do.

Another member: It does not pay exchange or duty.

Mr. Turner said the Government Departments wore more and more entering into trade and private enterprise was being pushed into a corner.

Mr. Lunn said he considered the Government Printing Office should be used for the printing of Government documents only. He looked upon the incursion of the Government into trade as most serious.

It was decided to ask the Associated Chambers of Commerce to make r strong protest to the authorities.
