AMATEUR ATHLETICS
FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT.
The annual football .ami basketball tournament of the Paten and District Public Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association was held in the local Domain on Wednesday in boisterous and showery weather. There was a fair attendance of the public, but the fact that the proceedings wore held on the same day as the ceremony of unveiling the monument to Turi prevented a large number from being present. The senior football championship was won by the Kohi School, who entered a team for the first time and who played excellent football. The junior championship was won by Whakamara, a strong and fast team, who defeated a particularly good team from Hurleyvillc in the final. The following were the results: JUNIORS. PATE A A V. PATE A CONVENT. B.’ Fitzwatcr scored shortly after the kick off aml Horner kicked : goal. Nelson next got over,'but the kick failed. Nelson got over cigala, but no goal resulted. In the second spell Gordon (2) and Nelson scored, Horner landing another goal. The game ended Patea A 17, Convent 0. Mr. S. Boyd rffereed. PATEA B V. KAKARAMEA. T. Partridge was the hero of- this game, scoring two tries, these being the only scores. Patea B (i, Kakaramca 0. Mr. R. 0. Rutherford refereed. WHAKAMARA V. ALTON. This contest proved a very even one, there being no score in the first spell. In the second spell Whakamara scored and won the game by J to 0. Mr. .1. Kcrrisk refereed.
WAVERLEY A V. HUK’LE V VILLE
Hurleyvillc scored and kicked a goal shortly after the start. This was the only score in that spell. In the second spell Hurleyvillc scored, throe times and kicked a goal, thus winning by 30 points to 0. Air. R. C. Rutherford refereed.
WAITOTARA V WAVERLEY B
Both sides were, evenly • matched, Wiwo scoring for Waitotara just before half time. In the second spell Sandifprd put up a good performance, dribbling the ball half the length of the ground and scoring. won by (5 points to 0. Mr. Kcrrisk refereed.
PATEA A V. WiAVERLEY CON- , VENT.
These sides were very evenly matched, there being no score on either side in the first spell. Tn the second spoil Wavcrlcy scored and R. Fltzwator equalised. Extra time had to be /played "and still there was no score. In the fourth spell Wavcrlcy Convent scored and won the match. Wavcrlcy Convent 3, Patea A 0. Mr.’Rutherford refereed.
PATEA B V. WHAKAMARA
Whakamara scored twice in the first spell;' but failed .in Ihe attempts at goal. Iu the second ■ spell Whakamara scored sno try and won by fl points to 0. Mr. Kcrrisk, refereed. JUNIORS. HURLEYVILLE V. WAYEKLEY' CONVENT. Hurleyvillc scored in the first three minutes, but failejl to add the major points. Couchman gained the second try, and landed a good goal with his bare foot. In the spell Hurleyvillc scored, but the kick failed. There was no further score,. Hurley villc winning by 11 points to 0. Mr. Kcrrisk refereed.
JUNIOR SEMI-FINAL. ' WHAKAMARA V. WAITOTARA. Whakamara scored and kicked j goal in the first spell. lit the scco'ht! spell Waitotara attacked, but could not cross the line, Whakamara winning by 5 points to 0. Mr. Kcrrisk rc forced. JUNIOR FINAL. WHAKAMARA V. HURLEY’ VILLE. ■Whakamara were given a 'free kick in front of the posts and had no difficulty in goaling. Shortly before half time they scored, but could not add the major points. In the second spell Hurleyvillc pressed and were nearly over several times, the game ending with Whakamara the winners by 0 points to -0. Mr. Rutherford refereed. SENIORS. WAYEKLEY V. KOHI. L. Oliver scored in the first two minutes for Kohi, but the kick failed. C. Oliver next scored under the posts and Perkins added the major points. L. Oliver next got* over and H. Powell' converted. In the second spell Perkins scored ben oath the posts, but the kick failed. *€. Oliver was next over and Walker sent the'bull over the bar. O. Oliver just before the call of time dribbled the ball over the line and converted, bringing the score to 2G to 6. Mr. Rutherford refereed.
PATEA CONVENT V. MANUTAHI,
Pa tea were much the smaller anil lighter team, ami were the first to score, L. jMclKonmi getting over and Fitzwater landing a goal. In the second spell Mountain scored on the call of time, Convent winning by 5 points to 3. Mr, Rutherford refereed. PATEA CONVENT V. WHENUAKURA. Just before the close of the first spell Booker scored for Whouualcura, but no goal resulted. In the second spell there was no score, 'Whenualcura winning by 3 points to-(b Rutherford refereed.
KOHI V. PATEA A. This proved one of the most exciting pomes of the tournament, Patea, who were the lighter team, tackling and kicking like veterans. The first spell ended with no score on either side. In the second spell Kohi had the benefit of the wind and attacked strongly, and Walker, running strongly, scored well out, H. Powell landing a fine goal. There was no further score. Mr. Kerrisk refereed.
SENIOR FINAL. KOHI V. WHENUAKURA,
L. Oliver was the first to open the score, and landed a goal. Ho scored again a couple of minutes later, but no goal resulted. Immediately after the kick off Oliver ran through, for the third time and A. Oliver landed an easy goal. Half-time was called with the score Kohi hi, Whcnuakura 0. In the second spell there was no further score, Kohi thus winning the championship and the Duffy Shield.
The following composed the winning Kohi team: L. Oliver, A. Oliver, C. Oliver, H. Powell, D, Perkins, J. Hopkinson, and L, Walker.
No small amount of the team’s success is due to the excellent coaching of Mr. D. \yalkcr, who spared no effort during the present season to teach the members of the team the game. PREVIOUS WINNERS. PREVIOUS WINNERS. The following were the previous win-
ners: 1927: Waverley. 1928: Whennakura. 1929: Waverley. 1930; Waverley and Whenuakura tied. 1931: Kakaramea. 1932: Waverley. Referees for the basketball were Mrs. Jillett, Misses Heinold, Dale, and Galvor, The winning team was as follows: E. Willis, N. Gordon, E. Whitehead, A. Hamel, E. Wybouruc, T. Partridge, T. Reid, M. Goad, and B. Heal. At the conclusion of the games, Mr. D. Hurley, jun., in a brief speech, thanked the people for their attendance and congratulated the winners on their success. The football, ho said, had been the best seen at any tournament the association had yet hold. He then called upon Mr. E. F. Hemingway, chairman of the Wanganui Education Board, toA present the trophies won. Mr. Hemingway, in presenting the 'rophics, said' he would like to remind one and all that the association existed wholly and solely -for the purpose of fostering amateur sport, the best of all sports. Those who had. at-_ tended that day should bo happy in the knowledge that by, attending they were helping to keep the -association alive. He congratulated 'the Kohl School on winning the senior football competition on the occasion of its first appearance at the annual tournament. Cheers were then given for the winners and referees and officials. The thanks of all lovers of amateur ■iport were due to those who assisted to make the function a success, particularly the secretary, Mr. J. A. 'Wither, on whom the brunt of the work fell, and to -Messrs. R. C. Rutherford, LL.M., and J. Kerrisk, who refereed in all the games except the first, which was taken by Mr. Boyd. The whole of the arrangements- were carried through to schedule time, and without a hitch of any kind, a proof of the excellent organising work carried out by the secretary, which enabled players and spectators to attend the ceremony of unveiling the Turi Memorial..
