FOOTBALL
WAIKATO 25, TARANAKI 13. By 25 (.seven tries, two converted) to 15 (two tries, one converted, a penalty goal, and a field goal) the Taranaki Eugby representatives were defeated by Waikato in the opening match of Taranaki’s northern tour after a fast, ragged game with flashes of sparkling play that partly compensated for the numerous mistakes both sides made. OTHER RESULTS. Hawke’s Bay 50, v. Manawhenua 21. Southland 20, Wellington 14, A BENEFIT MATCH. A football match of more than ordinary interest will be held in the local Domain on Saturday week next between a team representing the local unemployed and the local natives. The good showing put up by the unemployed team against the Hawera team a few Saturdays ago is a guarantee that some first class football will be witnessed. Half of the proceeds are to bo given to the fund which the natives are raising for the purpose of erecting a memorial to the famous navigator Turi, who made his home at Patea, and the other half to the unemployed relief fund. As a curtainraiser a ladies’ match will be played, which of itself will be well worth the price of admission.
