OPUNAKE WINS LAMB CUP. An interesting competition for teams of four men was hold ac the local beach yesterday in line weather, with a slight southerly breeze. Altogether some eight loams competed, from Wanganui, Opunake, and Pa tea, the honours going to Opunake, a team who gave a very lino exhibition. Shortly before 5 o’clock the judges, -Messrs. Cooper, Anderson, and Manly, announced the result cf the competition, the points gained being as under: — Opunake A team, Sti 1-3, 1. Opunake B team, 85, 2. Castlccliff A team, 78, 3. The fastest times for the bellmen were as follows: —
B. y. Dudley, Opunake, dm. ISs, G. Harrison, Opunake, dm. 20s. C. B. Bullivant, Castlccliff, dm. Sis. Lucas, Castleclilf, Gin. 21s.
B. y. Budley therefore wins the cup for the champion bcltman of Wanganui and Taranaki, presented by Mr. E. Reed, of the Patca Bakery, the Opuuako A team winning the Margaret Lamb Cup. The team consisted of G. Harrison (belt), L. McCullum (line), L. Donnelly (reel, captain), and L. Harvey (patient).
Immediately after the results wore knowm an adjournment was made \o the bathing pavilion, where the cups were presented. His Worship the Mayor, in presenting the cups, said he would like first: of all to extend a hearty welcome to those competitors who had come such a long way to give them such a good exhibition of life saving. The value of the life saving training was shown by the fact that since the inception of life saving clubs the death rate from drowning in New Zealand had decreased by 57.2 per cent. The training also helped to keep the young men lit for the football season, which would shortly commence. His Worship explained that the cup was donated by Mr. W. T. Lamb in memory of his mother, who, when over SO years of age, used to paddle on the beach, and had always-taken the keenest interest in life saving work. Ho only wished there wore more public-spirited men like Mr. Lamb, who wore ready and willing to encourage life saving work. His Worship then handed the Margaret Lamb Cup to L. Donnelly, captain of the Opunake team, and the Reed Cup to B. B. Dudley, as champion bellman.
Heany chcors for the victors, the judges, and His Worship the Mayor concluded a most successful afternoon.
