The value of the life saving training was shown by the fact that since the inception of life saving clubs the death rate from drowning in New Zealand had decreased by 57.2 per cent. The training also helped to keep the young men lit for the football season, which would shortly commence. His Worship explained that the cup was donated by Mr. W. T. Lamb in memory of his mother, who, when over SO years of age, used to paddle on the beach, and had always-taken the keenest interest in life saving work. Ho only wished there wore more public-spirited men like Mr. Lamb, who wore ready and willing to encourage life saving work. His Worship then handed the Margaret Lamb Cup to L.
