GIRL GUIDES’ CAMP FIRE

A SUCCESSFUL INNOVATION

The Patea Girl Guides hold their first campfire on Friday evening in the Patea Butchery Company’s paddock, opposite the Domain memorial gates. The night was ideal, beingclear and calm, and there was a large attendance of Guides, Brownies, parents, and friends. Divisional Commissioner Houston, of Hawcra, was present, together with a band of Hawcra Guides, who led the singing of Guide songs, round the cheery campfire. Mrs. Houston also told an interesting story, for which she was loudly applauded. An enrolment ceremony was held, the following being enrolled as Guides: Joyce Finlayson, Kathleen Blackman, Dora Metcalfe, Eileen Gush, Jean Hunt, Mrs. F. Eamsbottom, Mrs. F. Spooner, and Mrs. G, Williams. Bread and buns were toasted round the fire and potatoes roasted, while tea was prepared in campfire fashion and ser\ - cd to all.

“Taps” was sung, followed by a Guide prayer and the “National Anthem,” and the evening closed with three hearty cheers for Mrs. Houston and the Hawora Guides for their kindness in assisting with the campfire concert.
