PATEA TOWN HALL TALKIES

"ALL QUIET ’’ —FINALLY TO-NIGHT. Nobody should miss seeing "All Quiet on the Western Front,’’ which will be shown at the Town Hall for the last time to-night. This marvellous production was awarded pride of place for 1930 both by the British and American Society of Arts. Those words fail to describe it. WAT URDAY— EARTHQUAKE FILM. A stupendous programme will bo shown to-morrow, when "The Time, The Place, and The Girl’’ will head a big list of pictures. A comprehensive picture of the big earthquake will 1 o be shown, and in addition there will be four short features, including Fox News. College football heroes, those burly lads who haul ice all summer, occupy the front page all the football season, and thou go into the bond business, have, been good-naturedly satirised in the talkies. Warner Bros, have built their screen version of "The Time, The Place, and The Girl” from tho famous stage sulccess of Adams, Hough and Howard, around a character who is ai composite of all the football heroes of the day. Robert Lord made the screen adaptation of this famous stage comedy. 'Grant Withers takes tho part of tho football hero. His portrayal gives the low-down on just what football stars do study in order to keep from funking. He is a boy who makes the 75 yard broken field run in the last minute of play and is carried off the field by a frantic and idolising mob. And as for the ladies—he is a "divil with ’em.'” The disturbing situations show that it’s no wonder a football hero now and then does get involved In complications with the fair —and fickle —sex. Gertrude Olmsted has the romantic role opposite Withers and the cast includes Betty Compson, John Davidson, James R. Kirkwood, Bert Roach, Vivian Oakland, Gerald King, Irene Haisman, and Grctchen Hartman. Howard Bretherton directed.
