A MAYOR’S MARESNEST
In a remit speech the .Mayor ol' > 'll rust elm roll reported a wonderful discovery. There was no proposal, he said, to raid the huge incomes which were drawn by some of our people. He was sure that: the majority of the people had no idea of the colossal incomes of some persons in this Dominion. There were 520 people drawing £51)1)0 or more a year. There were 220 people with an income of £IO,OOO a year or over, and l'_’ people with an income of £IOO,OOO a year or over. That did not really represent the position, lor the average of those 12 people with £IOO,OOO a year or over was £218,000 a year. Those people were only going to be asked to pay 30s a year towards unemployment. (Laughter.) This is gross misrepresentation, because the figures in cl tide till the big companies operating in New Zealand, and thousands of their modest shareholders arc obliged to pay through the taxation of companies at the maximum.
