MOTOR CYCLE ACCIDENT

YOUNG MAN KILLED,

BROTHER OF WHENUAKURA RESIDENT.

A young man named Archibald Melville, twin brother of Mr. Melville, who is manager for Mrs. J. S. Pearce, When uakura, was killed instantly on Thurs day at Marybank. about a mile beyond the southern boundary of the City of Wanganui. The deceased was riding a Harley Davidson motor cycle and was travelling down hill when he crashed into a Morris Oxford threcseater car driven by John Stewart, of Marton, the force of the impact crushing the front wheel and forks of the cycle against the engine, the deceased being killed instantly. PA TEA BOYS INJURED. IT wo young men, J. Gunn and It. Clarkson, who are well known in local cycling circles, met with a rather severe accident when motor cycling home from Hawera about midnight on Saturday. When near the Ball Road intersection with the main road Gunn, who was riding on the cycle with Clarkson behind him states that a horse suddenly appeared in front of them, with the result thatt a collision occurred, both cyclists being thrown heavily on to the tarred road and rendered unconscious. Fortunately Mr. Lankshear was travelling just behind and picked up the unconscious youths and took them to Dr. Simmons’ surgery, where their injuries were attended to by Dr. Chappell and the youths afterwards removed to their homes. Gunn appears to have got off fairly lightly,, sustaining injuries to his right shoulder and leg only, whilst Clarkson, besides being badly bruised all over the body, received a severe cut over the left eye and cuts on the chin and lips. But for the fact that they wore proceeding slowly at the time it is more than probable that one or both would have sustained fatal injuries. How it was that neither of them saw the horse until they were upon it, as it was bright moonlight at the time and the cycle lamp was burning well, neither boy can say. Evidence of the impact is afforded by the suit worn by Clarkson, a practically new one, which was practically cut to ribbons.
