END OF STRIKE IN SIGHT
DESIRE OF MINERS TO WORK,
POSITION IN N.S.W,
Indications point to an early settle ment of the coal strike as a result oi the expressed desire of the miners’ representatives for a compromise and the pressure of business people for reopening of the mines in order to avoid bankruptcy (says a message from Sydney). The Royal Commission inquiring into the industry issued a statement defining the basis of profits and the procedure it intended to adopt in arriving at a decision in this regard. The miners' representative, however, declares there is no guarantee that the commission's findings will be binding on cither side. They are not anxious to await its ultimate conclusions; therefore overtures will be made during the week-end to the mine-owners for the resumption of negotiations for e settlement. It is expected that a recommendation to accept the owners' bed-rock terms will be approved by a full meeting of the representatives of engine-drivers and mine employees tonight.
