REPAIRING QUAKE DAMAGE

MAKING HOMES HABITABLE

INITIAL WOEK BEGUN.

Sldcndid progress is being made with the immediate repair work at Murchison under the supervision of Mr. Stringer. This work is to make homes habitable and enable settlers to return, giving them one fireplace, repairing the water supply, and making temporary repairs to serious leaks. A limit of £SO is made on any one home from this fund, but repairs in ■most cases have} far (from reached that amount. The township portion is being dealt with first owing to the xrnor access to the valleys until the roads are cleared.

There arc G 9 homos in the township area, of which approximately 16 have been repaired and made habitable. Eight arc receiving attention, four are considered past temporary repair, while the balance are (considered satisfactory for the time' being. Most of these homes will require further assistance later from the general relief fund, the present work merely making the homes habitable.

The Public iWoriks Department is making good progress with the work on the roads. A stock route to mid-Ma-ruia is practically completed.
