Mr. and Mrs. D. Quickendcr, of the fiahotu Hotel, who arc coming to take up their residence in Patou, were farewelled by a large gathering in the Rahotu Hall on Monday night, and presented with a silver tea and coffee service on a bronze tray and a tnwelling rug on behalf of settlers in the district. The presentation was made by Mr. W. C. Green, chairman of the Egmont County Council, who remarked that he had known Mr. Quickendcr for many years and had always found him to be very thorough in anything he undertook. Tributes to Mr. and Mrs. Quickendcr were also paid by Messrs. Lcathcrby and Eriwata on behalf of the Rahotu natives. -Mr. Quickendcr will succeed Mr. W. R. Morse as ‘mine host’ of the Central Hotel.

The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Jno, Smith and family will regret to learn that they arc leaving Whcnuakura shortly for Maxwell, where they will reside in the future. Mr. and Mrs. ■Smith and family have been residents of this district for the past 18 years.

After a period of nearly 41 years’ service, Mr. F. W. Carey, Wellington manager for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., is retiring. Mr. Carey, who is well known throughout the greater part of Kcw Zealand, is probably the oldest employee of the company still at work. He joined the firm ng a boy in February, ISS9, and was for some years at Blenheim and Masterton, where he was appointed manager in 1904. In. 1911 he was transferred to Hawcra, where he resided till 191 S, when he was appointed Wellington manager for the company.

At a meeting of Eltham citizens on Monday Deputy Superintendent S. Murray and Fireman A. M. Burrows were each presented with the N.Z.F.B.A. gold star for Yl years’ continuous service.
