FIVE PERSONS DROWNED

OTAGO HARBOUR ACCIDENT. VESSEL FOUND CAPSIZED-'. Five persons were drowned in a distressing accident which occurred in the lower harbour at Dunedin on Sunday aiternoon when a yacht carrying about Hx passengers eapsi/.ed off Hie soul hen. ■ale in Vuarantine Island. 'The accident was first noticed when the feiry steamer Waiureka, which was miming between the island and Dunedin, rounded the point coming ito tube tile channel. The yacht appeared to be about a 16-footer. When it was first seen there Mere three men hanging to it and another was seen about 60 feet away. The last named, however, disappeared before, help could be sent. The water was very rough, lint a bandsman jumped off the steamer, and tried to rescue one of the men hanging- on to the yacht. He held him up for some time, but he finally ween down.

Reports of the accident arc very meagre, but it is known that one man was rescued. His name is thought to be Victor Duell. One other was orought back in the ferry dea-.d, despite continued attempts to revive him by artificial respiration. The captain of the Waiarcka did everything possible, but no other bodies could be recovered. The accident is regarded as one of the worst that has ewer occurred on the Otago Harbour.
