PATEA DOMAIN BOARD

ORDINARY meeting. A meeting of the committee of the Eaten Domain Board wan held on Thursday, Mr. E. E. Hemingway presiding. Messrs, Thomson, Cronin, Fair weather, Tapps, and Jenkins (hon. secretary) were also present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

Correspondence was read from the Cricket Club, stating that • any assistance they could render the board in the matter of the bazaar they would be only too pleased to give. The Boy tscouts troop wrote in a similar strain, and stated that representatives on the Bazaar committee would be appointed at the next meeting. The letters were received, members expressing their appreciation of the action of the members of the Cricket Club and Boy Scouts. The secretary said the Borough Council, in response to the board’s request, had very kindly agreed to erect lights on the shed and grandstand for the benefit of tourists and residents using the Domain.

It was decided that the very hearty thanks of the board be tendered the council for their action.

G BOUND COMMITTEE’S REPORT,

The committee’s report, as under, was read and adopted:— Your committee have pleasure in reporting that the Domain grounds are in excellent order. The paths ' and aeiiges have received attention, and the interior of the playing area has been regularly rolled. Mowing lias not been necessary, thanks to the work of the sheep. The exterior of the oval has oeen cut and harrowed. The mowing of the oval will bo begun as soon us occasion warrants it. Gorso, which should have been grubbed instead of Doing merely cut, has been coming away in the community paddock, and a start has been made to grub it. Apart from it being a noxious weed, which renders the board liable to prosecution if not eradicated, it would, unless grubbed, lessen the -value of the paddock for grazing purposes. 'The horse has been giving trouble through the gates being left open again and again, allowing it to escape. Mr. Elevens has offered the board the use of his horse for mowing and rolling and the board’s horse, which needs work i adly, has been loaned to Messrs. Glcnny, Ltd., until needed. The Croquet Club have agreed to plant and maintain some flower beds in the vacant portion of the Domain between their lawn and Eginont (Street. Wo recommend that the beds bo prepared. The painting of the memorial gates will be taken in hand us soon as the gorso grubbing is ‘completed. When the gates have been painted it is recommended that the lupin in the paddock be cut. It is hoped that this will practically do away with the necessity for any further cutting in the future. THE BAZAAR. A successful public meeting was held ta consider the question of a monster bazaar early in the New Year, and a strong committee appointed to proceed with the matter. Generous offers of support have been received from the Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, and representatives of various sports bodies, who have promised to tact .individually as it is difficult to get a meeting of members to appoint official representatives. Your committee recommend that a further meeting be called on Thursday next to consider details in connection with the bazaar.

Tlie report was adopted. The question of charging tourists for the use of the Domain was considered. Mr. Thomson said it was in the interests of the bigger towns to get Patea to fall into line by making a charge Cor the use of the Domain. Tourists should be offered an inducement to come to the town, and the best inducement was to make the camping ground free, borne schemes could ibe devised for the receipt of donations for the use of the Domain. He considered that the work of the hoard in connection with the tourists had been the best work done for the town for years, as every tourist using the Domain was ‘ walking advertisement for the town. He hoped no charge would be made.

Mr. Fainveather said that at one place where he had camped a charge had been made and the ground was execrable. After a brief discussion it was decided that a charge bo made and that the chairman and secretary draft a card informing tourists that they will oe expected to make a donation to thv board's funds for the use of thet Domain, in addition. There being no further business the meeting adjourned.
