Patea & Waverley Press FRIDAY JANUARY 21, 1927 THE PATEA BEACH.

'i'ill'j general opinion amongst lown and cJtiiili'v solilcr.; in tlii« disti-ict id that i'atca possesses a more valuable asset m its nuigaillceut beach than the townspeople imagine, it has been suggested to us that ix the people 01 ihe town realised the lull value ox .lie beach as a picnic and'holiclay ivsort they would do two tlung* —first o;i: all they would sec 1 iuu there was a good road both for vehicular and pedestrian irathe to the beach, and secondly that the advantages of the bracu as a picnic and holiday resort wore inure widely known. Owing to the formation of the coastline-' there is practically no place between Wavcricy and Uaweva, except i’atca, where one can enjoy a day at the seaside. Most of the few places that, are available arc so far from the high road and so circumscribed as to make them useless as holiday resorts. Patea beach, however, besides being close at hand, is large enough to accommodate all the holidaymakers of the province at any time, and in addition has the advantage of the liver fur boating and fishing purposes. No more ideal spot could be desired for a day’s outing for country children than the beacn. There is a large area of sandy foreshore, making an ideal children’s playground, with live additional at-

traction of herring and flounder lulling in the river. On due days adults can obtain good sport tasking for schmipper from the walls of the breakwater, where good nau!s have recently It ecu made. All that is required is to make the approach to the beach better and make the beach more widely known. It seems to. ns that the time is ripe for a forward movement in the town with a view to

supplementing the splendid efforts put forward by the council and the Domain Board to make the town attractive to outsiders and prospective settlers. A recent visitor, who had not been in Patea for some 14 years, expressed his astonishnlent at the changes that he noticed. AYh.cn he was last in the town there was no Town Tlali, no post office, no water and drainage system, and no up-to-date elective, lighting plan!. The town has now all of these, and in addition has a lar-scaled road throughout its whole length, with its footpaths permanently kerbed and channeled in concrete. There is, in fact, no comparison with the town of 14 years ago and. the town of to-day. Situated as it is on a hill, open to flic osonc-laden breezes from the Pacific, with a porous soil and a mild and temperate climate. Baton is undoubtedly one of the healthiest places in Ihe Dominion. Fur recreation it lias public, tennis and croquet courts, cricket, foot balk and-hoc-

key ground's and a. tirst-ehiss howling green. Anyone desirous of spending the aiiininn of his days in a healthy town, free from Ihr hurly-burly and husllr of the modern city. could nof find a hetler spol lo sHIle in than this old and historic place. The early natives. who, after journeying along the east coast and crossing at the Manukau to the west, finally decided to make Paten their home, were not far wrong' after ad. Tintown and its advantages assuredly deserve to he move widely known, and avo hope the Pitmens' League Avill take steps at an early date to make- the outside world
