CROQUET

PATEA B V. HAWERA B. Members of the Hawcra Park B team visited Patea on Tuesday last to try conclusions with the local B team, and after a most enjoyable day’s croquet played in perfect weather and on keen lawns were defeated by the substantial margin of (36 points. The visitors were the guests of the local team to lunch at Mr. E. Reed’s bakery, the catering —if possible —being even better than before. Later the team was entertained to afternoon tea by the club, departing well satisfied with the day’s outing. -The following were the scores, Hawcra players being mentioned first: DOUBLES. Mesdamcs Murdoch and King 17 v. Mr. Gibbs and Mrs. Finlay -6. Mesdamcs Meredith and Chadwick lo v. Miss Turkington and Mrs. Dwyer 26. SINGLES. Mrs. Murdoch 12 v. Mr. Gibbs 26. Mrs. King 5 v. Mrs. Finlay 26. Mrs. Chadwick 9 v. Miss Turkington 11 (unfinished). Mrs. Meredith 17 v. Mrs. Dwyer 26. Totals: Hawcra 75, Patea 141. NOTES AND COMMENTS. Good form was shown by all the players, several Patea members in particular playing outstandingly good games. The matches were remarkable for the way in .which the Hawera players pluckily fought out losing games, in many eases rallying considerably when the Patea players were on the point o i winning. A return match will be played a. Hawera at an early date.
