FORD OAR RUMOURS
NO CHANGE IN DESIGN. The rumours regarding the Ford experiments with a new type of ear have been officially denied. In a recent statement Mr. Ford authorised a most emphatic denial of the report that the company is soon to place on the marhut a gear shift car of the six or eight cylinder persuasion. It is helpful to have this mutter cleared up, because uncertainty with regard to the operations of such a powerful organisation as the Ford Motor Company naturally has a disquieting effect on many lines of business. In the present case the rumours which flew thick and fast seemed to have some basis, if not in fact, in reason. There had been a slackening of Ford sales. The Ford organisation had been ordering heavier steel for certain parts of a motor vehicle. This latter, it is now explained, is for use in a heavier truck which will be offered. It was known that the Ford car with a conventional sliding selective gear set had been built ami was being tested around Detroit. This does not mean us much as might at first appear, because all the big companies build experimental vehicles and try them out fox long periods, and then in many instances never put them in production. As a matter of fact, in the huge Ford laboratory there arc probably many designs and devices, which have been brought to a position of near perfection, which never will see the saleroom floor of Ford dealers. For the present, at any rate, the motoring world at largo can rest in the assurance that the Ford car will 'continue as it has been.
