PERSONAL
The many friends of Miss M. Luxton, who has been an inmafe of the New Plymouth Hospital for some months past, will be glad to learn that she has so far recovered as to be able to be removed to her home in Patea.
Mr. W. E. Hird, M.A., headmaster of the Taihape D.H. School, and formerly of Patea, was on Monday the guest at a social evening tendered him by the Taihape Literary Circle. During the evening Mr. Hird was presented with a gold-mounted fountain pen on behalf of the members of the Literary Circle, and with a case of pipes on behalf of the library subscribers. Mr. Hird, in replying to the good wishes expressed for a pleasant holiday in Canada and .a safe return, stated that life was either one of tw T o things—service for self alone and £.s.d. or service for others. The latter, he declared, was the only one that could be adopted by any sane-thinking man or woman. Mr. Hird leaves for Canada next week, and expects to be away about six months.
