THE ELECTIONS

REFORM WAVE SWEEPS THE COUNTRY TRIUMPHANT MAJORITY 'DICKIE GAINS PATEA. ; . The elections on Wednesday resultedin a Coates wave sweeping the country, the party led by him gaining a triumphant majority, the Nationalist Party being reduced to ID, and the Labour Party to 12, the latter thus becoming the Official Opposition Party, although Lhey also returned reduced in strength'. Great interest was shown locally in the election, a large crowd -thronging the Town Hall, where the results were screened and also, announced by means of wireless, a “ loud speaker"- being placed on the stage, enabling the' 'in'formation which was-broadcasted from Wellington, to bo heard by the, audience. The people, however, preferred the screening, as the wireless results at times could not be heard.

A large crowd also gathered outside the Post Office, where the results were; shown by the “ Press” from the postmaster's window on to a screen erected in the roadway. The screening was ably carried out by Mr. A. J. Cooper, who operated the magic lantern. The result of the local contest was known ■shortly after eight o'clock, when the Hawera figures came to hand, and placed the issue beyond a doubt. Mr. Dickie arrived from Hawera at about 11.30, and addressed the audience in the Town Hall and outside the Post Office, expressing his thanks to the electors for the high honour conferred on him, and thanking his committee for the solid work put in on his behalf. At his call hearty cheers were given for the defeated candidate, hearty cheers being also given for Mr. Dickie and the local committee. The staff of the Post Office were on hand receiving results up to two a.m., when the final announcement showing the strength of the parties was received. The thanks of the public and of ourselves are due to the postmaster (Mr. H. A. Green) and his staff, particularly Messrs. Semple, Lawson, and Anderson, for the facilities afforded us for displaying the figures of the various contests. The following are the final results: — AUCKLAND CENTRAL. W. E. Parry (L) 6035 C. A.
