PATEA COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLYMEETING; The usual monthly meeting of the Patea County Council was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday. There were present:—Councillors Gibbs (chairman), Belton, Taylor, Scown, Alexander, Sutherland, Back, McDonald, and Watkins. CULVEET WANTED. Mr. Collier interviewed the council asking if it would put a culvert across the Mahgawhio Valley Bead to drain ihis paddock adjoining the road. He offered to supply the pipes if the council would put them in. The council agreed to comply with Mr. Collier's request. BEQUEST FOE SUBSIDY. Mr. Bremer approached the council with a request that it subsidise £1 for £1 an amount of about £IOO which the settlers in his district intend to raise by separate rate for metalling purposes, and* also if the council would metal six chains on the. Otautu Boad.

The chairman paid he always liked to help those ratepayers who were prepared to do work by raising a special rate. After some discussion the council agreed to assist the above settlers by way of subsidy, but held oyer the matter of metalling the six chains for the engineer to report. EAGECOUESE DEVIATION. . The tender of Mr. Vincent was accepted for the deviation of the main road near Waverley Eacecpurse. LAKES PADDOCK.

Mr. A. J. Kendrick wrote asking for the use of the Lakes Paddock. Eef erred to the . engineer with power to act. GOESE. It was decided that the engineer take action against settlers for allowing gorsc to grow on roads opposite their properties within the county. BALL EOAD. It was decided that the necessary repairs required on the Ball Eoad between the main road and the railway lino be put in hand. BOUNDAEY EOAD. It was decided on the motion of Mr. McDonald, seconded by Mr. Watkins, that £IOO from each of the Moumahaki and Wayerley Eidings together with the grant of £2OO be spent on metal for the Boundary Eoad. POWENA METAL. Councillors Belton, Watkins, Back, and Scown were appointed a committee to go into the question of obtaining metal from the Powena with power to act. GENEEAL. - It was decided that the heavy traffic license fees already collected be handed over to the Wanganui City Council and that the clerk and engineer be authorised to. take any action they deem lit to collect outstanding fees. • ENGINEEE 'S EEPOET. ■ - ; The engineer's monthly report was as follows;^— - Main Eoad and General. —Persistent bad weather has considerably held up Work during the last month. The widening of the road at the washout near the Whcnuakura Bridge is nearly complete. Gilding has been continued as weather conditions permitted between the Waverioy Eacecourse and„ Moumahaki, and is now practically complte. On the Waverley Eacccourso deviation, all the formalities have now been taken in. connection with the taking of the land required; The fencing material is all in order, and the fencing will* be proceeded with as soon as the material comes to hand. Tenders for the formation have been called. Ee metal for the whole county, to date no raetaf has come from Kakariki, and as we shall be requiring a very large quantity this year, I am now endeavouring to arrange another supply to supplement the Kakariki supply.

Otoia West.—Work in this district has been confined to lifting the metal from the old road across the Alton Gorge and carting the same to Hurley, Fetch, Central Ball, and Hunter Roads. Otoia East. —There is little to report from this district. General surface work has been carried out..

Waverley Riding.—Twenty trucks of pit metal have come to hand and been spread on tho Deviation Road and on Boundary Road (Cave's Hill). Metal is also coming to hand for metalling on Wybourne’s Road, and this work has been attended to on the Kohi and Karehake Roads and on the Mataimoana Road.

Moumafhaki Riding.—A bad washout has occurred on the Block IX Hill. The Little Saddle is also in bad order on the Waikare side. The surfacemen have been engaged on their lengths and an extra man has been put on the Waikare length to assist in getting this length in passable condition. Kapara Riding. l —Several slips have come down on the Kaimanuka Saddle and on the Lower Waitotara Valley Road, but these roads are reported open for traffic. Surface work has been carried out on the Puraroto Hapara, Waitotara Valley, and Kaimanuka Hill Roads,.

Accounts were read and passed for payment, and the council rose.
