Mr IL Darroch, headmaster of Terrace School, Wellington, and secretary of the Wellington branch of the Xavy League, and lion, secretary of > the Wel-

lington Cricket Association, announced at a gathering of cricketers at Wellington that he had delinitely decided to contest the Wellington Cast seat at; the next general election.

Mr J. X. Massey, in reply to a deputation, stated that the Massey family were highly honoured by the request that he should contest his father's seat for Franklin. His private affairs absolutely forbade his entrance into politics at the present time.

A very highly-esteemed, well-known resident of the Cambridge district passed away on the Kith inst. (says the “Waikato Independent"), in the person of Thomas Walter Discombe, of Pukeroro, aged 74 years. Mr -Discombe, who was an active man, and carried his age well, had enjoyed fairly good health until quite recently, and had only been couJined to his bed for about a fortnight. Death was due to pneumonic influenza. Deceased was burn in Exeter, Devonshire, and was

brought up to farming pursuits. Some 40 years ago, together with his wife and four young children, he sailed for Xcw Zealand in the ship Triumph. On arrival in this country he was farming at Itenrucra for about five years, after which he took up the well-known “Gamp Farm" at Otahuhu, which he successfully farmed for some 20 years. From thence he came to the Cambridge district, 15 years ago, and has resided at Pukeroro ever since. Mr Discombe was a man of highest integrity, who was held in high esteem, and his death will bo mourned by a great main' friends. He was a zealous churchman, and for 20 years held the office, of churchwarden at the Anglican Church at Otahuhu. Deceased was married twice, among the members of his family by his first wife being Mrs J. H. Barber (Hurlcyville).
