COURSING

PATEA PLUMPTON COURSING CLUB FIRST MEETING OF THE SEASON The first coursing meeting ot the season was held on the Club’s Coursing Enclosure at Whennaknra on Wednesday, Afay 20th. The climatic conditions were ideal, and the Club was fortunate in this respect, as the preceding two days wore stormy. There was a good attendance of the sporting public, and •seme very good coursing was witnessed, Entries were brought forward from far afield, and many local dogs also competed with credit. The appointments were in good order, due mainly to the efforts of a small working brigade, who take a live interest in the

Club, and spent a great deal of time in the interests of the sport. It is to bo regretted that the hares were not in better fettle, but, owing to the depredations of hawks, cats, etc., the Club had no reserves to draw from, consequently some “green” hares, with insufficient training, had to be used. However, in the face of these obstacles, the day’s programme was got oft in good time. It .seems a pity that the small group of enthusiasts, who give a great deal of their time in the furtherance of the interests of tho Club, should bo subjected to adverse criticism from others, as it tends to give visiting patrons a bad impression of the Club. The coursing meetings, directly, bring u very considerable amount of money into the town, and it is to the town’s interests that the Chib should remain extant.

The judge (Mr J. Feavor), assisted by Mr F. S. McKenna, gave every satisfaction, ami the officials managed the meeting in a thoroughly capable manner.
