WAVERLEY MEMORIAL COMMITTEE

Waverley

(From Our Own Correspondent)

A public meeting was held in tbe Supper Hoorn on Wednesday evening to receive the report of the Committee. Mr A. J. Adlam presided, but, outside of the Committee, there was only a small attendance of the public. The chairman, in his opening remarks, said that, as instructed at the last public meeting, the Committee had called tenders for the erection of the clock tower. So far, about £IOO had been subscribed, and the lowest tender for the work was £1245, which amount included the steps and gates, the details being: Tower £650, clock £SOO, gates, etc. £95. The position to date was that they required more money before accepting any tender, Mr F. Johnston said that the proposed clock was a four-dial striking clock. A silent clock could be procured for £2OO, plus cost of erection. The total cost of the design the Committee had in view was £1335 plus extras. Mr A. E. Symcs said that, personally, he did not consider they wore justified in proceeding with the work without a further £4OO. Mr H. Catanach asked what was the Committee’s objection to Walpole and Patterson’s scheme. Mr Johnston, in reply, said the Committee were handling public money. They therefore considered the work should be tendered for. Mr 0. Dickie said that, in his opinion, a striking clock was not necessary, in any ease. Whichever clock the meeting decided upon, he was prepared to double his subscription. He considered it should not be a hard matter to get 20 others to do likewise. The small sacrifice they would be making, he said, was nothing to the sacrifice of those they were erecting the memorial in memory of. He moved that efforts be made within 14 days to raise a further £4OO, and that the work be proceeded with as soon as that amount is in sight. Seconded by Mr S. Aiken and carried. Mr Aiken then moved that the mooting be adjourned for 14 days to report progress. Seconded by Mr 1. Mirroson and carried. Several further donations were promised in the room, Messrs S. Aiken, C. Dickie and H. Bradmorc were elected to the Committee.
