PATEA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE The General Purposes Committee of the Patea Borough Council met on Monday night, Mr F. W. Grainger pre. siding. Grs Naismith, Williams, Honeyfield, Jones, Watson, Kerrisk, Dunklcy and Finlayson were also present. An apology was received from His Worship the Mayor for non-attendance through indisposition. A deputation from the Domain Board asked leave to wait on the Committee with regard to the charge for current for the training shed. After the deputation withdrew it was decided to leave the matter to the Electric Light Committee.

The question of fencing the Council's house occupied by Mr R. Clarke ’ was considered and it was decided to do the necessary fencing if Mr Smith, the adjoining owner will agree to pay hair tire cost, and submit a price to the next meeting of the Council. The Street Supervisor's report was read and recommended for adoption by the Council.

The Town Clerk reported that the period for effecting improvements to certain Glasgow leases would expire on November 7th.

It was decided that the Finance Committee inspect the buildings and report .o the Council. / The Committee then rose. / i ELECTRIC -LIGHT COAIAHTTEE. The Elemtric Light and AVatcr and Drainage Committee met immediately after the Gen rai Purposes Committee. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was received from Mr J. D. Fairwcather stating he would be prepared to take current after New Year. A application for current for four lights and a 4 h.p. motor with permission to extend to a 5 h.p. machine was received from Air C. F. Pulley and granted. Tho charge for water for water trough in Mrs Gibson's paddock was fixed at £1 per annum. An application for an increase in salary was received from the senior assistant at the hydro station. It was decided that the salary be increased by 5/-, per week. The report of the Electrical Engineer was read. The matter of the large amount,,of water being used wag discussed and it? was decided that the Engineer make a house to house inspection of taps, etc., shortly. The request of the Domain Board for a reduction in the charge for current was considered. , . , Thc k Board stated that no current was being used at present bmt that the minimum charge was being levied.' They asked'that this be waived and that payment be made on th© actual current used. It was pointed out thatthe cost of connecting the shed was between £lO and £ls and no returns had been nreceived sb far from the Board. The Committee in view of this fact felt that they could not see their way clear to accede to th© request. Before tho meeting adjourned the Deputy Alayor referred in feeling terms the death of the late Mr H. O. Clarke who, bo said, had been Mayor for several years, and had always taken the keenest interest in the affairs of the town. He would move that the committee place on record its appreciation of the services rendered to the town and district by Mr Clarke and that the committee tender its deep sympathy with the relatives in their bereavement.

The resolution was carried in silence members standing. Tho committee then rose.
