SEASIDE IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE

A meeting of the committee of the Beasio Improvement Society was held on Tuesday night, Messrs. Hemingway, White, Ferry, Duukley, Ormsby jun., Haworth, Matthews, Boyne, and Gilbert being present. A number of ladies were also present. A deputation consisting of Messrs. J. H. Cronin, Btrouts, and Locker waited on the. Committee on behalf of the Domain Board, and asked that the picnic be postponed so as not to clash with the War Memorial project.

The chairman stated that the War Memorial certainly should take precedence over any other function. Personally, he considered it was too late for a picnic, as the weatlfer could not be relied upon from now onward.

Mr. Dunkley said the need of funds was very great for the society. If they did not have the funds they would lose a year. In view of the representations of the Domain Board he would move that the picnic be postponed until Easter Monday. Mr. Gilbert seconded. Mr. Perry said he was not in favour of the proposal to hold the sports on Easter Monday, as ho did not think the country people would come out to two functions—the sports on the Saturday and the picnic on the Monday. Could not the society liolj> the War Memorial Committee 1 ? Mr. Matthews suggested that the committee throw all their weight into the War Memorial, and afterwards raise funds during the winter months by means of concerts, dances, etc., for tree-planting.

Mr. White said ho would not like to sec anything take precedence over the. War Memorial. He did not think it would do the society any good to clash with the Sports Club either. With regard to the weather, ho. thought it was largely a gamble, and he would prefer to see the picnic postponed. Mrs. Grainger said the ladies would bo prepared to take up a street collection for the War Memorial on, say, the Ifit.h inst., when it was quite possible they would he able to collect £IOO. Later on, when the Memorial was erected they could concentrate on the Seaside Society. The chairman thanked the ladies for their offer, and said he would move as an amendment that tlie offer put forward by Mrs. Grainger be accepted, and that the picnic be postponed for the present.

This was seconded by Mr. Matthews, and carried unanimously.
