A great timber tire in the clock* damaged warehouses in Antwerp to the extent of several million francs. It is understood that Sir Cordon Heewart, Liberal M.P. for East Leicester, and. since January, IWIU, AttorneyGeneral, has accepted the Chief Justiceship in succession to Lord Leading, who has been appointed GovernorGeneral of India.
A party of workmen who left Preston for Australia eleven months ago has returned. One engineer states that conditions in Australia arc worse than in England, and excepting in the building trade, there are no openings for skilled workers.
Senator Reid has introduced a resolution requesting .the U.S. president to ascertain whether Britain is willing to consider cession to the knifed States of all or any part of her possessions in the West Indies, especially 'Trinidad and Bermuda. The proposal was uot discussed, bur allowed to go over for further discussion.
Argentina has refused the request of the Allies that she will prevent German exportation of war materials to Argentina in violation of the Versailles Treaty. The Government takes the ground that Argentina is not concerned in the stipulations of the treaty, to which she was not a party. The Franco-Polish agreement provides that if Poland is attacked Prance will assist with materials and technicians, but no troops. Poland undertakes to reorganise her army on a stronger footing. The agreement regulates tariffs and the exchange of commodities, and provides for a French and Polish undertaking to exploit American oil.
