“LEST WE FORGET.”

Tlic public arc* once again being given the opportunity of showing thior appreciation of the sacrifices that have ’neon made for them by the gallant lads of this district who fell in the Great War. For four and a half years .the greatest fighting machine the world has ever seen was working with might and main to gain world-wide power, and to trample other nations under foot. Thanhs to the ready response made by the Empire’s manhood, the enemy was not only kept at bay, but eventually conquered. During the years of struggle and hardship, the people of this country enjoyed not only immunity from danger, but prosperity far beyond any ever enjoyed before. This security and comfort was brought: about largely .through the heroic efforts of the nation’s manhood, who not only endured dangers and privations innumerable, but many of them gave their lives in the end in order that the world might be free. Is it too much to ask the public to show their gratitude by subscribing what they can afford towards a memorial that will keep the memory green forever of those who gave their all tor those who were left behind? Those who have lost any near and dear to them in the late war will, when the memorial is erected, find sonic consolation in the knowledge that something has boon done to show their dear ones that the people arc grateful, whilst the gallant lads who have passed “behind the veil” will be made happy at the knowledge that they are not forgotten. Let us hope that everyone in this district will crown the splendid efforts put foiward in connection with patriotic work during the war by seeing that a memorial to the glorious dead is erected without further delay.
