PATEA AND DISTRICT WAR MEMORIAL.

MEETING OF LADIES. A meeting of ladies was held on Monday night at the conclusion of the Domain Board meeting, Mcsdamcs A. T. Christensen (Mayoress), J. .1. lloltham, W. C. Glenny, A. .T. Cooper, L. T. Adams, ,T. H. Cronin, E. Hemingway, and Miss Beamish being present. The chairman welcomed the ladies on behalf of the Domain Board, and said he hoped that with the help of the ladies sufficient funds would be collected to enable the memorial to be erected. They felt if they had the support and assistance of the ladies the funds would be forthcoming.

Mr. Stfouis said ho had been asked to apologise for the unavoidable absence of Airs. Powdrcll, son., who had asked that her name bo put down for £;1. Mr. F. 1.. Harrison said ho was strongly opposed to the suggestion that they should have a garden fete similar to the one held by the Church of England recently. The memorial, in his opinion, should be erected from straight-out donations, the people giving to show their appreciation of the sacrifices that had been made on their behalf.

Mrs. Christensen endorsed Mr. Harrison’s remarks, and 'thought that if the town and district wore to be thoroughly canvassed the necessary funds would be forthcoming. It was largely a question of organisation and systematic effort. It would be a disgrace if the amount were not forthcoming. Mr. Strouts said he felt if they asked the people they would receive. They should collect from one and all. The poor man’s shilling would be equal to the rich man’s £5. No sum should be too small caul none too largo to receive. The chairman said Mr. Strouts had drafted a letter which was to be sent to Patca people who had left the district since the war broke out, and whose sons had gone to the front. They would feel it an honour to find that they were not forgotten. After a brief discussion, it was unanimously decided that a canvass bo made as suggested, those ladies present being a committee with power to add to their number.

It was decided to appoint Miss Beamish treasurer for the Ladies’ Committee. Mrs. F. W. Locker, 0. M. Strouts, and the chairman were appointed a committee to meet the Manutahi and Alton settlers, and lay the position before them. It was decided that the committee meet the Board on -the 2Slh inst., at S p.m., to report progress, and that any farther details be left in the hands of the chairman, secretary, and Air. Strouts. The meeting then terminated, with a vote of thanks to the chairman for convening the meeting.
