PATEA HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD
ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of Patea Hospital Hoard was held on Monday, Mr. J. H. Johnson presiding. Messrs. Hurley, Watkins, Matthews, Belton, Hooper, and McDonald were also present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The chairman welcomed the now members to the Board, and said lie hoped they would work together harmoniously as the previous Board had. He expected them to speak freely on the various matters that came up for consideration, and trusted their efforts would bo crowned with .success. Medical Superintendent’s Report. The Medical Superintendent (Ur. Simmons) reported as follows: —Pttients in hospital on November TO, 20: admitted during December, 21; discharged, 25; in hospital on December 3.1, Hi. The secretary reported that nothing further had been received in regard to the clearing of the gorsc from the Meßroom estate. The chairman was authorised to arrange for the letting of the Board’s cottage. MiC Belton stated that the Board had to pay £27 a year for repairs. The tenant had to take it for a year at least. He would like to see the tenant make the sanitary alterations. It was decided that this course be followed. The chairman brought forward the question of .the salaries ot the nurses at the hospital. The Matron had stated :to him that the salaries of the nurses should be raised yearly.
Mr. Hurley moved that the nurses ’ salaries be raised to £4-8 for first year, £54 for second year, and £tit) for the third year.
Mr. Belton seconded, and said he was of opinion that the present wages question was only a temporary one. They might be prepared, in a feuyears, to work for less wages. Mr. Matthews: What arc they paying in other places'!
Mr. Belton: Considerably less. Mr. Matthews said ho did not want to cut down salaries, but could the Board afford it !
The resolution was then put and carried.
It was decided, on- the motion of Mr. Matthews, seconded by Mr. Belton, that the Matron's salary be raised to £175 per year.
It Avas resolved that Hurso Haines be granted £2 expenses incurred during her recent examination. It Avas also decided that* the arrangement for cutting strainer posts be left Avith the chairman. The date of each monthly mooting was fixed for the second Tuesday in each month.
It Avas decided that the Board meet at the hospital on the day of the next meeting.
Accounts were road and passed for payment, and the Board rose.
