RECTOR NOT A GARDENER.
The Ji'ev. Samuel Wood, rector of Stroxton, who was lined last monlli for failing to cultivate one rood of land at the rectory, denied wilful negligence. He said that ho had done his best, but his proper occupation could not be neglected for what what was not his principal work. The rector admitted that his disposition was rather too sanguine, ami that he did not succeed in doing what lie hoped. He could not say that the hind was fit for growing potatoes, as there were many stones in it. The prosecution said the matter was before the authorities two years ago. The land was capable of growing potatoes. The defendant was given every latitude, and lnsl year the proceedings were stayed on the defendant promising to comply with the order. It was considered ilia I lie had defied the authorities, and that his attitude showed wilful neglect.
