THE AMERICA CUP

SHAMROCK AC!ATX WIXS

The Shamrock won the second race for the America Cup by two minutes 1(5 seconds. There are three more race.-, to be sailed before (ho contest is deeded. According to the reports the Amerian yacht Resolute gained in the last .•each but when the Shamrock was hreo miles from the finish, and was ony some seconds over the time allowance, a flattening wind reduced the Resolute's chance.

RESOLUTE WINS THIRD RACE

A later message from New York states that owing to the Shamrock usng a larger sail the Resolute’s time alowanec was increased to 7 minutes 1 second, and she therefore won the third

Sir Thomas Lipton has made three previous endeavours to “lift” the America Gup with throe costly and extreme •easels. In .1890 .he took across Sham■ock 1., designed by W. Fife. In that ■car the defender was the Columbia — anions for earning the honour of redlining the Cup in two successive concsts —Shamrock being beaten in three •aces, in one of which she lost her toplast and withdrew. In 1001 the Am•rieans were not especially successful n building the vessel which they had ■repared to defend the Cup, and in the rial races the old 1800 boat Columbia ailed by that most successful of skippers, Captain Charles Barr, defeated the ;cw vessel Constitution, which had been built for .the purpose of defending the rophy. Consequently the New York Vacht Club again selected the Columbia o defend the Cup against Sir Thomas Tipton’s second challenger, Shamrock 1., of which G. L. Watson was the dcugner. After very close racing the Columbia —which was the better handed—retained the prize. The next conest, and the last prior to that now on '.and, was in 1000. On this occasion dir Thomas Lipton took across Shamock 111., another Fife designed craft, 'uiving the same water-line as Reliance, rather over a foot loss beam, and carry"ng 14,337 square feet of sail, a differ■ncc of 1823 square feet. Again only hrec races out of the series of five arranged for proved necessary ifor the reaching of a decision.
